Die dreizehnjährige Ivy ist alles andere als begeistert, als sie auf den englischen Landsitz zu ihrem kauzigen Großvater ziehen soll. Richard Carlton redet nicht viel, hat nur seinen verwunschenen Garten im Kopf und verbietet Ivy sogar, einen Teil davon zu betreten: den sogenannten Poison Garden, der mit schmiedeeisernen Toren vom Rest des Anwesens getrennt ist. Doch dann schneit es auf einmal mitten im Spätsommer, Ivy hört seltsame Gesänge und sieht unheimliche Gestalten. Kurz darauf ist ihr Großvater wie vom Erdboden verschluckt.
