About this listen

HE'S GOING BACK TO THE PLACE HE NEVER PLANNED TO SEE AGAIN:

HIS HOMETOWN

Chef and Restaurateur Jake Ruiz left Newport, Washington, and never looked back. After his parents had practically disowned him for being gay, the town was nothing but bad memories for Jake. But, years later, a family emergency brings him back to his hometown. Grappling with the death of his husband and suddenly finding himself a single father to his five-year-old, Jake also has to now deal with his disapproving mother, his ailing father, a crumbling family restaurant, and the sudden reintroduction of Jake's childhood crush into his life, Colton Humphrey. Before he knows it, the feelings that Jake once had for Colt begin to resurface and Jake begins to wonder if perhaps Newport could be in his future as well.

The debut novel from author Will Manwill explores the complex relationships and family dynamics of a conservative, Mexican-American family struggling to accept their son, who is still trying to put the pieces of his own life back together.

it's a cosy romance from the Pacific Northwest that fully captures the feel of the area. unfortunately the narration is stilted but the romance is adorable. worth a read.

better than it should be

Gosh, I loved every moment of this feel-good family drama / romance! Although he’s a successful chef and owner of multiple restaurants, Jake Ruiz has also had his share of sorrow. His parents rejected him for being gay and he’s still not over the death of his husband. When his father has a stroke, Jake rushes back to his hometown of Newport in East Washington where he and his young son have to contend with Jake’s fiery, aggressively religious mother. It doesn’t help that his father’s treating physician is Dr Colton Humphrey, Jake’s estranged childhood friend and first crush. Has fate finally brought them back together?

The first section of this layered second-chances story is told through Jake’s eyes and jumps between the current emergency and past pivotal points in Jake’s life. We then see many of the same events through Colt’s eyes. The third section follows both Jake and Colt as the present action unfolds and they sort out many of their previous misunderstandings and hurts. I thought all the main characters were well-drawn and I particularly loved Jake and Colt—such lovely guys—as well as Jake’s BFF, Gigi, she’s such a handful! The romance was a particularly slow-burn with fade-to-black scenes which seemed to suit the overall sweet tone. 🎧 Latin American narrator Andre Bellido was exactly right for the audio and he pitched all the emotions perfectly (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!

Amazingly good debut novel, I loved every moment!
