Doch schon bald machte er sich auf die Suche nach einer neuen Mutter für seine Kinder. Er heiratete wieder und alle waren glücklich und zufrieden. Nach kurzer Zeit regte sich Eifersucht im Herzen seiner neuen Gemahlin: sie hatte Angst, der König könne seine Kinder mehr lieben als sie. Sie lockte die Kinder zu einem See und verwandelte sie in Schwäne, die dreimal 300 Jahre auf Erlösung warten sollten. Sie sprach: "Erst wenn der Norden und der Süden sich treffen und die Glocken läuten, wird der Fluch von Euch genommen." So lebten die vier Schwäne auf dem kalten Wasser und blieben immer zusammen. Wer ihren Gesang hörte, vergaß all sein Leid. Würden sie jemals erlöst werden?
