About this listen

Magnetic as the Sun

Jimmy Alsop, a vivacious journalist, longs to trade his sheltered life for a summer of adventure but lacks the confidence to launch his stellar plan.

Lonely as the Moon

Nova Skye, an aloof scientist, wants to resuscitate his dead love life but hasn't found the right man to kickstart his guarded heart.

Eclipse of the Heart

Sparks fly when a chance encounter drops Jimmy and Nova into the same orbit. Though their approach to life and love couldn't be more different, they're inexplicably drawn together as if connected by an invisible string. With nothing to lose but their inhibitions, Jimmy and Nova embark on an epic adventure of discovery. Passions soar with the sultry Savannah temperatures, and soon, their carefree summer becomes something more profound and beautiful than either man bargained for. But are the ties that bind sturdy enough to withstand a lifetime, or will they fray after a season?

Contains mature themes.

I loved the characters, I read the whole story, and mostly enjoyed it. On a couple of occasions I felt the writing needed to be edited down a little bit. For example we don't need specifics on how your phone was still connected to Bluetooth. The second was with the narration. Not my favourite narrator TBH. It often sounded robotic, even AI- even though I know it wasn't. Still worth a listen.

Lovely story, minor issues with narration and writing

Cadet journalist Jimmy Alsop embarks on a summer of exploring waning historical arts and crafts courses for a series of articles. This brings him into the orbit of Nova Skye, an older astronomer, whose mother still produces astrological star charts. Nova has a young daughter and the two bond with Jimmy. Jimmy has made a list of “firsts” he’d like to experience this summer that include some pretty raunchy items and he’s mortified when he loses the list. Nova has found the list and he’s happy to help Jimmy tick off some of the items but their age gap gives him pause.

This was a sweet and inoffensive age-gap romance between two decent guys. Nova’s daughter, Milly June, is a delight, as are Nova’s parents and Jimmy’s mother and grandmother. I felt like the first half of the story zipped along at a good pace but found the second half a little slow. There were some minor subplots but they didn’t hold my attention as much as the romance did. I was also surprised that while the romantic chemistry between Nova and Jimmy was satisfying, the sex scenes were mechanical and lacked passion. Given Nova was basically tutoring Jimmy in what to do, they felt more educational than spontaneous. 🎧 While I enjoy Tristan James’ narrations on police procedural / murder-mystery romances, he can sound wooden and does so here—that may explain why I found some of the story and the sex scenes dragged.

Sweet but dragged a little!
