卵を体内に蓄えて川をのぼるサケやマスは、ヒグマや猛禽類のエサとなり、食べ残された死骸は、土に返って森を豊かにします。
海・川・陸にまたがるこうした食物連鎖は、世界でも貴重なもの。さらに知床では、シマフクロウやオオワシなど、絶滅の危機にある動物も暮らします。
生物の営みが、知床を世界遺産にしたのです。
