龍安寺は、エリザベス女王や哲学者・サルトルなどの外国人を魅了した石庭で知られます。15個の石だけを配置した簡素な石庭は、今では世界でもっとも有名な日本庭園といわれています。
天龍寺の庭園は、借景と呼ばれる技法を取り入れた初期の例。眺めていると、寺の外にある嵐山や亀山が、庭の風景の一部のように見えてくるから不思議です。
