Ryoanji Temple, Tenryuji Temple, and Saihoji Temple are Zen temples in the area called Rakusai in Kyoto. 龍安寺、天龍寺、西芳寺は、京都の洛西と呼ばれるエリアにある禅宗寺院。3つの寺はいずれも、庭園の素晴らしさから世界遺産に登録されました。
龍安寺は、エリザベス女王や哲学者・サルトルなどの外国人を魅了した石庭で知られます。15個の石だけを配置した簡素な石庭は、今では世界でもっとも有名な日本庭園といわれています。
天龍寺の庭園は、借景と呼ばれる技法を取り入れた初期の例。眺めていると、寺の外にある嵐山や亀山が、庭の風景の一部のように見えてくるから不思議です。
苔寺の名で知られる西芳寺の庭園は、上下2段に分かれ、上段は日本最古とされる枯山水庭園。一方の下段は遊歩道以外の地面がすべて苔で覆われ、たとえようもない美しさです。
