Zazen is a practice found in Zen, one kind of Buddhism. 座禅とは、仏教の宗派のひとつ、禅宗の修行を指します。
禅は「精神の統一」を意味し、それを行うには座った姿勢が適していることから、座禅という言葉が生まれました。
あぐらをかくように座って姿勢を正し、精神統一をするのが座禅の基本です。
座禅は目を閉じて瞑想するのではなく、細目の状態で斜め45度の、約1m先に視線を合わせ、精神統一をはかります。
座禅を行っている時に余計なことを考えたり眠くなったりして姿勢が崩れると、僧侶に板状の棒で肩のあたりをたたかれます。
寺院の中には、一般の人を集めた座禅会や宿泊座禅などを行っているところもあり、気軽に座禅体験ができます。
