日本では昔、人々が間食に木の実などを食べていた時代があり、これが菓子の起原といわれています。
室町時代以降、日本では茶の湯が流行しました。それに伴って和菓子はお茶の味を引き立てる役割を担い、お茶と一緒に提供されるものとして定着しました。現在でもその風習は息づいています。
お茶とともに出される菓子を「お茶請け」と呼びます。特に茶の湯で出される上生菓子は、製法にもこだわり、季節感も盛り込まれて、見た目にも美しいのが特徴です。
また、お茶には胃を刺激する茶カテキンやカフェインが含まれているため、お茶請けを一緒に食べることで、胃の負担を軽くする効果もあります。
