当時、仏様を偶像化した仏像を祀るために建てられたのが、日本での寺の始まりだといわれています。
同時に寺は、キリスト教の修道院のように、悟りを目指す修行者たちが共同生活をする修行の場でもあります。
また日本では、多くの人が仏教の方式で葬式を行うため、境内に墓地のある寺も多くあります。
