About this listen
Ameyoko is the name of a popular shopping street. It's about 400 meters long from JR Ueno Station to Okachimachi Station.
アメ横とは、JR上野駅から御徒町駅までの約400ｍにわたって伸びる商店街の通称です。
食品はもちろん、貴金属や化粧品、生活雑貨などを扱う店が、300軒以上も集まっています。
かつては住宅街でしたが、空襲で焼け野原となった後に「闇市」となり、現在のような商店街になりました。
アメ横という名は、飴を売る店やアメリカ軍の放出品を扱う店が多かったことから「飴屋横丁」「アメリカ横丁」などと呼ばれていたことに由来します。
一年を通じて多くの人でにぎわいますが、特に年末にはおせち料理の食材を買う人でごった返します。
