Along with the Gion Matsuri, one of the events representing the summer in Kyoto is Gozan Okuribi (the Gozan Bonfire), sometimes known as Daimonji no Okuribi (the Daimonji Bonfire). 祇園祭とともに、京都の夏を代表する行事の一つが、大文字の送り火とも呼ばれる五山送り火です。
送り火は、お盆に帰ってきた先祖の魂を供養した後、再びあの世に送り出す仏教の行事です。
京都では8月16日の夜、京都を囲む5つの山に送り火を焚くことから、五山送り火と呼ばれています。山肌に浮かび上がる送り火を見て、人々は手を合わせます。
五山送り火の由来や歴史ははっきりしませんが、地元の人々が長年にわたって受け継いできました。
送り火を焚いた後の炭は魔除けになるといわれ、京都では玄関にこの炭を掲げる家庭も見られます。
また、水や酒の入った盃に送り火を映して飲むと、無病息災に暮らせるという言い伝えもあります。
