Pork cutlet is made by coating a thick slice of pork in flour, beaten egg, and breadcrumbs, and then deep frying it. とんかつは、厚めにスライスした豚肉に小麦粉と溶き卵、パン粉をつけて揚げた料理です。
明治時代に伝わった西洋料理のカツレツを、昭和初期、日本風にアレンジしてできました。
とんかつには肉の部位によって、ヒレかつやロースかつなどの種類があります。
豚肉以外では牛肉を使ったビフかつ、鶏肉を使ったチキンかつもあります。
また、かつ丼やかつサンドのようなアレンジ料理もあり、地方特有のとんかつのひとつには、甘い味噌だれをかけた名古屋の味噌かつがあります。
日本には多くのとんかつ専門店があり、たいていの店ではキャベツの千切りや甘辛いソースが一緒に提供されます。
