Basic tempura is fish, shellfish and vegetables fried in a batter made from eggs, water, and flour. 16世紀の戦国時代にポルトガルから日本に伝わり、江戸時代に全国に広まったといわれる天ぷらは、当時は屋台で立ち食いをするファーストフードでした。
天つゆと呼ばれるタレにつけて食べる場合もあれば、塩を少しだけつけて食べる場合もあります。
一時期、江戸幕府の初代将軍だった徳川家康は天ぷらの食べ過ぎが原因で死んだという説もありました。
それほど天ぷらは、江戸時代の美食家が夢中になった料理だったのです。
基本的な天ぷらは、魚介類や野菜などに、卵と水と小麦粉で作った衣をつけて揚げますが、最近ではアイスクリームやまんじゅうなど、変わり種の天ぷらも増えています。
