Oden is a dish made by simmering daikon, chikuwa, konnyaku, and a variety of other ingredients in a pot with soup. おでんは、大根やちくわ、こんにゃくなどのさまざまな材料を、だし汁が入った鍋で煮込んだ料理です。ルーツは南北朝時代に生まれた田楽と呼ばれる食べ物で、田楽に「お」がついて「お田楽」となり、それが「おでん」に変わったと考えられています。
本来の田楽は、竹串に豆腐を刺して焼き、味噌を塗って食べるものですが、手間がかかるため、江戸時代に煮込むようになりました。
おでんはおでん屋で食べるほか、手軽に作れるため家庭料理としても人気です。
スーパーやデパートでは便利なおでん種セットが売られ、コンビニエンスストアでもおでんを販売しています。
おでんは地域によっても特徴があり、静岡県の黒おでん、愛知県の味噌おでんの2つが有名です。
