 Menchi katsu is a popular side dish on par with croquette. メンチカツは、コロッケと並ぶ惣菜の人気メニューで、ひき肉に玉ねぎを混ぜたタネに、パン粉などからなる衣をつけて油で揚げて作ります。
メンチカツは明治時代に東京の洋食店が考案したとも、昭和時代に兵庫県の精肉店が考案したともいわれています。
「ミンスミートカツレツ」が省略されたうえ、「ミンス（ひき肉／ひき肉にする）」が「メンチ」となり、メンチカツとなったとの説がありますが、確かなことはわかりません。
ソースをかけて食べるのが、メンチカツの基本。ご飯のおかずとして食べるほか、サンドイッチなどパンにはさんで食べる場合もあります。
