About this listen

#1 New York Times Bestseller

Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.

Chyna is a survivor, toughened by a lifelong struggle for safety and self-respect. Now she will be tested as never before. At first her sole aim is to get out alive - until, by chance, she learns the identity of Vess’s next intended victim, a faraway innocent only she can save. Driven by a newly discovered thirst for meaning beyond mere self-preservation, Chyna musters every inner resource she has to save an endangered girl...as moment by moment, the terrifying threat of Edgler Foreman Vess intensifies.

Critic Reviews

“Chills the reader to the core and establishes Koontz as a master.”—Associated Press

“Tumbling, hallucinogenic prose . . . The story does not move so much as rocket up the . . . gloomy highway with the reader in violent pursuit.”—The New York Times

“The most viscerally exciting thriller of the year.”—Publishers Weekly

Really enjoyed the underlying story. Something quite different and quite enjoyable.

But there were far too many times where scenes were massively over described, filled with fluff that added nothing to the story. Enough that I started to tune out at those points.

Narration was average at best. Very monotone, with little change in expression.

Disturbing, frustrating and gripping in equal measures. I stayed up too late listening to this one.

Bloody intense

Another great read from Dean Koontz. It was difficult to put it aside as it kept up the tension from beginning to the end. If you haven’t read it then I recommend that you do so.

tried to enjoy this book but the narrator spoiled it for me as she has a habit of dropping her T's . Example, kitten becomes ki'en...drove me mad as i found myself anticipating more dropped T's and therefore had difficulty concentrating on the story line. While i have heaps of respect for narrators, i am confused as to how this narrator was selected with this most obvious penchant.

Narrator dropping her T's drove me mad.

Almost never persisted with the darkness of the opening chapters. Glad I did. Deeply appreciated the snippets of theological insight.

The Essence of Truth about humanity

Maybe I was expecting the Dean Koontz of the Watchers era but this was just so over done with unnecessary descriptive dialogue, that it was a bit tedious. Add to that the narrator who,in my opinion did not let the story flow correctly and added pauses in the wrong places, well I struggled to the end with disappointment. Still a Koontz fan but not of this novel.

So So

Intense from beginning to end. You won’t want to put it down. There is no let up!

Totally intense
