Kongen er Olav Trygvesson. Skibet er Ormen den Lange, det mest berømte skib i Norden. Dagen er en sommerdag i år 1000, da det store slag står ved Svold. Fortælleren er en af de få på kongens skib, som overlevede dagen. Franz Berliner (1930-2014) har skrevet både voksen- og børnebøger. Mange af dem er inspireret af de sagn, han hørte, mens han arbejdede som radiotelegraf i Grønland. Sammen med sin kone, Bibi Berliner (f. 1931), har han endvidere skrevet en række socialrealistiske ungdomsromaner.
