Publisher's Summary

We hoped, desperately, that they came in peace.

We were wrong.

Thirty years after the Second Swarm War devastated Earth and its colonies, a powerful, mysterious alien ship has invaded our space. Entire planets are ravaged, whole moons shattered. Any starship sent against it never came home.

But Admiral Proctor, a war hero from our last brush with annihilation, is called out of retirement to take the reins of humanity's newest starship. The ISS Independence and her crew, with Admiral Proctor at the helm, will stand as Earth's last defense. Somehow, against all odds, they will save us, even when our enemy is not just an unstoppable alien ship, but a ghost from humanity's past bent on its utter destruction.

And if they fail, we fall.

For good.

Space drama very little tech

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Most of this book is about the conflict that occurs between humans. Space is only the backdrop.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The last chapter of the book actually started to get interesting ... started.

What about Greg Tremblay’s performance did you like?

Easy to listen to, good vocal range for different characters, nice reading speed.

Did Independence inspire you to do anything?

Write this review to remind me not to buy book 2.

Great new sfi opera trilogy. Must read.

Nick Webb has taken the time to build an exciting and dramatic core story that allows for both human/human and human/alien intertwined plots.
Thanks Nick for a great new beginning.

Great Si-Fi, well written!

The author spins a fine Si-Fi story and in the end you'll want to jump right into the next book in the series. If you love Si-Fi you'll love this book! Well written and great narration!

The best space battles I've read...

Shelby Proctor is BACK, and she's got a tangled mess of Aliens, Politics, BIG Business, and a Crazy new religion to sort out... At the same time that she's saving humanity... Again!
Once again Nick Webb delivers a rip-roaring good tale!

a

Independence is the start of a new series that follows on from the original Legacy Fleet Series that followed Tim Granger the Captain of several ‘Legacy’ class vessels in a war against an almost unstoppable opponent called the Swarm.
Alongside Granger, was a Commander at the time, Shelby Proctor, who is a brilliant biologist, who has studied the Swarm, but is also incredibly intelligent at puzzling things out using science, or just logic.
In the original series, it was Proctor who helped Granger defeat the Swarm, eventually, Granger took the last of the Legacy vessels, the USS Victory, and travelled into the black hole that the Swarm were using to enter our Universe, as the Swarm are actually not from our Universe, but they are cross-dimensional beings, and were using a particular black hole to communicate with other races in our Universe through something called the ‘Ligature’ to control them, and dominate or destroy all life in our Universe as they saw fit.
In Book 4 of the series, we have leapt forward 30years, the Galaxy is trying to get over the effects of everything that happened in what was known as the Second Swarm War, Proctor, now a retired Fleet Admiral, and having been credited as the one who hunted down and destroyed every last Swarm Carrier in our known Universe to make sure they were destroyed, as well as making peace with the Dolmasi and the Skiohra, is now lecturing at a University on Britannia.
However, the loss of her old ship, the flagship of the IDF, the ISS Chesapeake, and one of the most powerful ships in the fleet, has her recalled to duty and given command of a new, prototype ship, one with a new drive that allows for faster travel, and has additional firepower, the ISS Independence (Kind of a coincidence given the title of the book Hey??)
Proctor also learns that her nephew, Danny Proctor, has apparently been involved in a shocking incident over a planet, in which a nuclear device has been exploded, and thousands are dead.
Determined to find out what has happened to her nephew, and those responsible, as well as to identify this new threat and to once again, save humanity, Proctor takes command of the Independence. She also calls on some old friends to help her out, and we see the return of Tyler ‘Ballsy’ Volz as the CAG, Captain Prucha as her XO, and several new faces, a rather curious science officer, Commander Mumford, and a rather vexing Commander Yarborough who is her assistant XO.
What follows is Webb at his absolute best. This is not just a Mil Sci-Fi like the original series, Webb has stepped it up multiple notches, and there are several storylines going on within this book, each of them full of intrigue and mystery.
There is the main story of Proctor and the Independence, as they go and hunt this new alien threat. On top of that there is the side quest of discovering what has happened to Danny. Tied in with this is the storyline of the nuclear explosion over Sangre de Cristo. This leads to further storylines (Without Spoilers), relating to a separatist group within the IDF, called the Galactic People’s Congress (GPC), that wants to pull out of the IDF, as they are sick of all the wars and infighting. This introduces other characters, such as Ethan Zivic, one of the main characters of the story, who happens to be Ballsy’s son.
This book is utterly captivating, as there are multiple storylines, all weaving in and out of each other, and through each other, and whilst you, the reader, start to have some idea of what is going on, the actual Characters have no idea of how these different story arcs are intersecting, and it makes for a fascinating and intriguing story as everything unfolds.
Proctors character is just exceptional, this battle-hardened warrior, who has seen so much during her time, but is emotionally exhausted, and just over it all. All she wants is to go sit on a beach, drink and read, but she keeps getting pulled back into these battles. However, with her nephew missing, she is desperate to find out what has happened to him, and she feels honour bound to defend humanity. Her character has so much depth, passion, emotion and raw grit to her, she is just remarkable. Equally stunning, are the characters of Ballsy, and his son Ethan. Ballsy is just brilliant, with his serious, but laid back nature, he is a complete conundrum. He is absolutely dedicated to his work, and one of the best pilots and CAGs the fleet has, but he is also a total clown, with smart-alec comments always on hand.
His son is an even better pilot than his Dad, but Ethan hates authority, most likely because of his Dad. Their relationship is interesting to say the least.
Webb continues to show why he is the true master of Character Driven stories with this book, as the Character work is just outstanding, with each and every character having so much detail and depth to them.
Webb has also done an exceptional job with the world-building, creating such amazing backdrops with which to tell his stories, from the various ships, to multiple different planetscapes, some beautiful planets that are habitable, others, lifeless rocks, but all of them given such wonderful detail.
This is a thrilling start to what is going to be a brilliant series, one with multiple conspiracies, intrigue, nested within conspiracies, nested within mysteries. Each of the factions is trying to deceive the other, or out manoeuvre the other, whilst still trying to achieve their own goals, all whilst there is a dangerous alien threat trying to destroy them. It makes for an intense and engaging read, and one you can’t put down!! Must read for anyone who loved the first series, or is a fan of true Mil Sci-Fi, with Action Adventure, Mystery, Intrigue, and exceptional Characters!!
Greg Tremblay is exceptional, with a wonderful voice, and the ability to create a wide range of male and female voices, that are easy to distinguish, so that you know who is talking at any time. He has an easy voice to listen to, making it great to listen to over long periods. The other great thing about Tremblay, is that he doesn’t just Narrate, he puts emotion into his characters voices, so that you really understand how the characters are feeling. It really immerses the listener into the story just so much more, and makes the Narration just that much better. This is easily a book that you want to listen to rather than read as the Narration is so much better.
Trembaly’s Narration is outstanding and not to be missed!!

New series to follow?

I had this on pre order and when I got to listen found it very interesting.

Much later on in the life of Proctor, which I found to be cool. After all there would have been a hopefully good space of peace etc. But, it seems not everything went as well as we'd hoped for humanity after Granger saved us. There's been a lot of controversy still. And when Proctor is asked back to Captain a new ship because of a new threat, it soon becomes clear that there's more afoot and has been for many years.

There's a fair bit of will she won't she at first, and learning her nephew's involvement with a planets annihilation and the hows and why is what drives her to do the best she can.

Good to see some gamiliar faces in here too, and his son, who is mostly like his dad, and does exaclty what his dad does disobey orders.

Lots of exciting battles fought, loved the grangerites, haha I guess a hero really can be idolised that much, but somehow they were right and there was a message for her.

Greg, as usual does a great job with the narration. He puts so much effort into each character, and he really makes the older 'proctor' such a gem to follow into space. We are really routing for her in this story, and for those under her command. Some don't make it, but what war can be fought without losses. Good emotional story... kudos to both writer and narrator :)

As an aside, I did think there were a couple of funny moments, where I laughed at the writing choices, like tranny-jump... but the science still behind the new tech, the aliens and the war is good. Enjoyed it a lot, and will look out for more.

Pokes to see if there are any written... Oh yes, lots in Nick Webb's Kindle Worlds... they're great BTW shame Greg isn't narrating all those as well :)

Brilliant!

I love these books. The Legacy Fleet started me off and now that has finished, the story continues with the Legacy Ship Trilogy.

Greg Tremblay is perfect for the narration of this series and I hope the narrator is not changed, as has happened with other books.

I look forward, impatiently, for the following two books.
