Publisher's Summary

Rejected by a sister who has allowed her new status as wife to Mr. Bingley to make her proud, Elizabeth Bennet goes to her uncle's estate in Derbyshire, ostensibly to assist her cousin in her introduction to society. In reality, Elizabeth feels there is nothing left for her in the neighborhood of her birth.

Her uncle's estate is small, and Elizabeth must work while there, and though she finds her tasks easy to bear. She quickly becomes close to her young cousin and uncle, though her aunt is a hard, demanding woman, who seems to hold a grudge against Elizabeth. But she also meets many friends, including the daughter of an earl, and the handsome friend of her sister Jane's new husband, a Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.

As Elizabeth is slowly pulled from her melancholy, new vistas open up to her, and she realizes that she can still have everything she has ever wished to have. But the jealousy of a woman who is no friend of her courtship with a wealthy man threatens her newfound happiness, and the coming of a sister who rejected her has the potential to once again disrupt Elizabeth's life and destroy her future.

Great story

I loved this new Jann Rowlands' variation, and I believe it to be one oh his best books. Elizabeth is a bit depressed at the beginning, but she is a fighter and she perseveres. The Drummond are a very interesting family: a bitter mother, delightful children, and a father who tries to hold his head high, despise of the family's reduced circumstances. Darcy and Georgiana are friendly and loyal, and help Lizzy overcome her melancholy.

I enjoyed the interactions among local society, the ladies who appreciated Lizzy's spirit and wit, as well as the jealous ones. Georgiana, Olivia and Elizabeth friendship was heartwarming. And Lady Emily with colonel Fitzwilliam were very colorful characters.

My favorite part of the story was the Bingleys and Caroline's visit. Miss Bingley's antics are always a great fun, here she is determined, full of disdain and arrogant, the way I like her. I always believed, that Jane's life with Caroline in residence wouldn't be a pleasant one.

The narration was pleasant, but it didn't fit a Regency Era story, would have been much better suited for a Modern book.

Highly recommended

Weak narration

The story was sweet and entertaining. The narration was sketchy. With constant mispronunciations and misplaced inflections it seemed as if the narrator had no understanding of the story or many of the words therein . Her voice was at least pleasing.

Interesting version of Elizabeth and Darcy

An almost totally different story from Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. In this version Elizabeth does not meet Darcy until after Jane and George Bingley get married and there is not the well known misunderstanding between them. They get to fall in love naturally but there are women out there who think Darcy should be theirs. Women such as Carolina Bingley, who is deliciously mean and haughty. Women such as the daughter of an Earle who thinks that her estate and title should be sufficient for Darcy to choose her.

Jane and Elizabeth are estranged due to Jane's apparent feelings of superiority since she married George Bingley. This is too different from the original Jane Austen book.

A wonderful tale

The narrator was wonderful keeping me interested in the story.
This is a what if story about Jane’ marriage to Mr. Bingley causing her to change leaving Elizabeth lost and trying to find her way. Elizabeth goes north to help guide a cousin in her come out who lives Derbyshire near Lambton. Having heard about the Darcy’s Elizabeth befriends Miss Darcy. Time and growing interest gives Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth a connection that makes some happy and other unhappy. This is one of the best stories I have read so much so I had to have the audiobook.

If you love Jane Austen you might want to skip it

I love Jane Austen so was skeptical about this one and rightfully so but it had some really good reviews so I gave in and tried it. If you don't know or love Austen's work you might like this- honestly I don't know because after listening to almost 9 hours of it I couldn't take it anymore and definitely wasn't up for 6 more hours of it and moved on to another book. The narrator is awesome but the characters were definitely not true to Austen's style and the way she created them.

Absolutely adore this variation

I love this story, it hit all my marks when it comes to a Darcy and Elizabeth rendition. The author let us see what happens when Darcy and Elizabeth are able to meet and court naturally, without all the interference from the original. They still have challenges to overcome so the story doesn’t feel pointless or trite. I loved the performance as well. I’m a big fan and I hope more stories from this author come to Audible.

Good story, okay narration

A very different, but plausible variation. Without her family to embarrass Lizzy, and with Darcy on his home ground, the angst all comes from outside sources. From their initial attraction to the slow, steady, well considered building of their relationship and their growing love, the romance between them is sweet and real.

The narration is sometimes a bit stilted but generally quite good, although I got the impression that the English accent was not how Mary Sarah sounds naturally. There were also some odd pronunciations (e.g. Lutton instead of Luton, Mrs Ainsley instead of Mrs Annesley, fother instead of father, ornt instead of aunt etc...). On the positive side, the voices of different characters are generally clear.
