Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Maté, read by Daniel Maté.

To heal addiction, you have to go back to the start....

Dr Gabor Maté is one of the world’s most revered thinkers on the psychology of addiction. His radical findings - based on decades of work with patients challenged by catastrophic drug addiction and mental illness - are reframing how we view all human development.

In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society - not as a medical ‘condition’ but rather the result of a complex interplay of personal history, emotional development and brain chemistry.

Distilling cutting-edge research from around the world, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness. Blending personal stories and science with positive solutions, and written in spellbinding prose, it is a must-listen that will change how you see yourself, others and the world.

Tenth anniversary edition, updated with new chapter on the opioid crisis.

Very helpful

What a wonderfully broad, well researched, evidence based, humble and honest perspective to this complex and more-common-than-we-realize issue. Highly recommended.

Best book on addiction and human behaviour

A must read for anyone who has been touched by addiction and, really, everyone is using something to escape discomfort whether it’s TV, social media or alcohol and crack. Gabor mixes real life accounts with scientific findings and debunks common myths. He explains why the war on drugs is a useless effort and discusses what really is needed to tackle this problem. This exploration of human behaviour is tremendously enlightening and the 4+1 steps to become sober provides real hope.

Dr Mate's professional findings on alcohol

I purchased the audible book using the audible amazon offer (which is a great deal by the way), nonetheless, this book is not the usual lived perspective, it is the view from a Doctor's experience dealing with people (usually marginalised communities) who suffer from alcohol and drug addiction. The book discusses the reactions, thoughts and behaviours of the variety of addicts Dr Mate' has treated and helped. He also gives a professional evaluation of their experiences and discusses TRAUMA as one of the key issues to address in order to heal. In summary, this is a great book, great takeaways, and his voice is soothing and calm and easy to digest. Put it on your diary to read if you have anyone in the family or you have suffered and are still suffering from AOD addiction. "DR MATE' FOR PRESIDENT"

Can't read, listen or watch enough of this man! Dr Gabor Mate,..as always, so informative and yet simply explained in way that anyone can comprehend. The Scientific findings, and evidence based info which tackles the questions of "But why??" when intertwined with the real life stories of his patients, was not only enlightening but also heartbreaking! Should be made compulsory reading for all Public, Health, and Gov sector workers. Then ignorance is no excuse in stopping this futile ' War On Drugs'

Fantastic insights into the world of addiction and drug control policies

I came across drug addition problem in Vancouver when accidentally walked through East Hastings street as a tourist. Years later came across this book and listened to it twice now. Great insights on addiction, real life stories, insights into government drug policies and their effectiveness coming from some who spent time in the trenches seeing the problems first hand. Some views expressed could be considered controversial by some. Regardless, will promote a great discussion. I have just a Toastmasters speech based on findings of this book. Well worth a listen!

Brilliant book

I find it a brilliant book. It goes beyond the addictions per se and it takes us to the understanding of what is behind them. And let’s get real: we all have ours. And most often we don’t want to call them addictions because we can’t stand the fact that ‘we have an challenge’ to overcome! I love how Dr. Gabor Mate explains everything and takes us with him through his own journey! I absolutely loved the book!

I value his insightfulness/knowledge

Yes. Amazing and insightful. One would hope many working in the area of addictions and mental well-being read this book and/or any of his books. This includes those looking for their own understanding in trauma/addictions. Valued resource

Hung on every word

I've absolutely loved this book. the first four hours were just stories about people he'd worked with, if you wanted to drop a few of those you wouldn't miss tons of content. similarly, the chapter about the war on drugs (that I recommend, it was fascinating), you could skip it without missing vital content. For me, the end of the book, with the focus being on healing, was transformative and I literally hung on every word. I think the use of the word addiction is misleading, this book is for everyone, not just those who've found themselves addicted to something (behaviours or practices). I think about so many people who could use the information I've gained here, people who struggle to connect with themselves, to take good care of themselves or to communicate with their loved ones.

Compassionate & comprehensive explanation of addiction.

As a trainee psychotherapist I chose this book to get a good understanding of addiction before I start placements. Having just finished the book I feel humbled, and compassionate towards people with addiction. I have a better understanding of the problems, and a sense of the best way to work. This book was also easy to listen to, the narrator did an excellent job & kept me engaged throughout. I would definitely recommend it.

Enlightening listen

Having had addiction problems all my life, and having felt with them in various ways and to varying degree of success, this book has opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities and also to the fact that it’s not actually all my fault, for that I will be eternally grateful to Dr Maté. This is a must read for anyone with addiction issues or anyone struggling with living with or in relations with an addicted person.... Many thanks..... x

Informative, engaging, logical, extensive and excellently narrated. I’m my opinion some chapters are a little watered down but overall 4.5 out of 5, would listen to again, highly recommended
