Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Maté, read by Daniel Maté.

To heal addiction, you have to go back to the start....

Dr Gabor Maté is one of the world’s most revered thinkers on the psychology of addiction. His radical findings - based on decades of work with patients challenged by catastrophic drug addiction and mental illness - are reframing how we view all human development.

In this award-winning modern classic, Gabor Maté takes a holistic and compassionate approach to addiction, whether to alcohol, drugs, sex, money or anything self-destructive. He presents it not as a discrete phenomenon confined to a weak-willed few but as a continuum that runs through (and even underpins) our society - not as a medical ‘condition’ but rather the result of a complex interplay of personal history, emotional development and brain chemistry.

Distilling cutting-edge research from around the world, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness. Blending personal stories and science with positive solutions, and written in spellbinding prose, it is a must-listen that will change how you see yourself, others and the world.

Tenth anniversary edition, updated with new chapter on the opioid crisis.

Very helpful

What a wonderfully broad, well researched, evidence based, humble and honest perspective to this complex and more-common-than-we-realize issue. Highly recommended.

Best book on addiction and human behaviour

A must read for anyone who has been touched by addiction and, really, everyone is using something to escape discomfort whether it’s TV, social media or alcohol and crack. Gabor mixes real life accounts with scientific findings and debunks common myths. He explains why the war on drugs is a useless effort and discusses what really is needed to tackle this problem. This exploration of human behaviour is tremendously enlightening and the 4+1 steps to become sober provides real hope.

A fantastic understanding of addiction

A fantastic understanding of where addiction comes. This book helped me understand my needs, and start to see the needs of others around me a lot clearer than before. This helped approach people to what makes them feel loved, instead of if you do this I will love you. Judgement and criticism can take a huge emotional toll on people, especially loved ones.

Excellent, empathetic book, well delivered

Gabor Mate makes a sound case for treating addiction as a way of dealing with trauma rather than a matter of lifestyle choice. Addictions come in many different forms and most are soothing ways of dealing with childhood hurts and therefore should not be dealt with as criminal acts. Addiction benefits from treatment, not punishment. Dan Mate does a lovely job of reading this wonderful work. It is Illuminating and instructive. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Brilliant book

I find it a brilliant book. It goes beyond the addictions per se and it takes us to the understanding of what is behind them. And let’s get real: we all have ours. And most often we don’t want to call them addictions because we can’t stand the fact that ‘we have an challenge’ to overcome!
I love how Dr. Gabor Mate explains everything and takes us with him through his own journey!
I absolutely loved the book!

A great introduction to psychological trauma and addiction for medics and health workers

This book is a must read for all who seek to widen their perspective on the neurological and environmental causes of addiction beyond "choices" or free will.

Must read for therapists, body-workers, health workers, caretakers, and social workers.

Informative and highly valuable

The tone and pace of the delivery was perfect. I have shared widely, as I find this subject and Dr Maté's findings to have given me massive insights into my work, my parenting and the psyche of society. The puritanical approach to addicts by governments indicates a gross abdication of responsibility.

Hung on every word

I've absolutely loved this book. the first four hours were just stories about people he'd worked with, if you wanted to drop a few of those you wouldn't miss tons of content. similarly, the chapter about the war on drugs (that I recommend, it was fascinating), you could skip it without missing vital content. For me, the end of the book, with the focus being on healing, was transformative and I literally hung on every word.

I think the use of the word addiction is misleading, this book is for everyone, not just those who've found themselves addicted to something (behaviours or practices). I think about so many people who could use the information I've gained here, people who struggle to connect with themselves, to take good care of themselves or to communicate with their loved ones.

Compassionate & comprehensive explanation of addiction.

As a trainee psychotherapist I chose this book to get a good understanding of addiction before I start placements. Having just finished the book I feel humbled, and compassionate towards people with addiction. I have a better understanding of the problems, and a sense of the best way to work.

This book was also easy to listen to, the narrator did an excellent job & kept me engaged throughout. I would definitely recommend it.

Enlightening listen

Having had addiction problems all my life, and having felt with them in various ways and to varying degree of success, this book has opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities and also to the fact that it’s not actually all my fault, for that I will be eternally grateful to Dr Maté.

This is a must read for anyone with addiction issues or anyone struggling with living with or in relations with an addicted person....

Many thanks..... x

A great listen filled with major insights into the problem of addiction, a lot of which I recognised in my own past addictive behaviour.

A must read

This book is a must read for everyone whether you’re addicted, have someone around you with addiction or have non of these at all. We need more education like this for all so that we can, as a society, better aid those who are addicted to healing. And of course better ways of prevention which is always preferable to cure and far lest costly to society.
