Publisher's Summary

From shipwreck and heartbreak to treachery and war: can their love survive?

Abandoned as a baby and raised in a remote lighthouse off the wild Northumberland coast, Alice Fairchild has always dreamed of adventure. When a fierce storm wrecks a ship nearby, she risks everything in an act of bravery that alters the course of her life.

Aboard the doomed vessel is the handsome John Sinclair, a Scottish soldier on his way to India. The connection between them is instant, but soon fate intervenes and leaves Alice heartbroken and alone. Determined to take charge of her destiny but secretly hoping her path will cross again with John’s, she too makes a new start in colonial India.

Life there is colorful and exotic, but beneath the bright facade is an undercurrent of violence, and when the British invade Afghanistan, Alice is caught up in the dangerous campaign. When at last she hears news of John, she is torn between two very different lives. But will she follow her head or her heart?

Far pashmina mountains

I found the narrator extremely monotone, there were no pauses at the end of sentences. This made it difficult to understand at times.

The story dragged on too much, could have been shortened by an hour at least

Loved the story

Really enjoyed this book, however I found the stilted narration very irritating. A shame as I have enjoyed other audiobooks by this author immensely.

Narration

I loved the story, the performance how ever of the narrator was hard to get used to. The accents where great to me, because they have a brake from the strange diction in the other parts. I’m sorry to have to say this, i listen to a lot of books and this one was almost too annoying to stick it out. Im glad I did, the story is wonderful.

Might be more enjoyable with a different narrator.

The story was ok but I couldn't get past the narrator ready each sentence like she was checking off a grocery list. There was no fluidity to the narration. She made each sentence feel like it was standing alone from the rest.

How did the narrator get hired?

I tried. I really did. The narrator is terrible. Horrible. Has no grasp on how people talk. Cannot read aloud. She treats every punctuation mark like a period and speaks in a song song. It’s so so bad.

I like this author, but I can’t listen to this any longer. It’s actually sometimes hard to understand sometimes, based on her lack of understanding of punctuation functions. Otherwise, it’s just too annoying.

Review of Dar Pashmina Mountains

Great story but the narrator’s song song-y voice drove me crazy. She was very good with the accents, however.

Good story, irritating narration

The story was a good one, overly steeped in gory detail of the war in Afghanistan during the age of Akbar. The narrator had a flat tone except for a few of the characters, making it difficult to continue listening at times. The happy times were truncated and the sad times painfully protracted.

Wonderful story of lost, found, lost again, found again love

The story was captivating. Fictional story set against historical facts. The narration was good, however I did not like the way the narrative bits of the story were read like a check list with the same pattern throughout the book. Kinda sounded like it was the direction given to the narrator. The dialogue was more animated. Overall, it did not deter me from listening to the entire book.

Frustrating Indian/uk historical fiction

Although much of this novel was based on real characters, the two main ones were fictional. The British/Indian/ historical era of the late 19th century was interesting,. However, the main characters’ chances for happiness were thwarted so many times it made the novel rather ponderous. Good narration, just a bit sluggish and complicated as a novel.

Reader is a computer

The story would have been alright but the reader must be a computer as there is nothing natural or human in her reading. Quite the strangest I have ever heard.

So Victorian!

For those who love all things British, this is a great story and beautifully performed. The heroine is fiercely brave and resilient in all things except one bad marriage.

Ruined by the narrator

What a shame. Had to revert to reading the book. Terrible narration. Wish I had listened to a sample before i wasted my money.

Good Story but.......

This was a good story with great, well defined characters but the reading was awful. The narrator's voice was robotic and boring with little or no emphasis or emphasis, when there was any, in the wrong places. She did the accents of the characters in the speaking parts ok but the rest of it was awful, annoying and ruined the story for me completely. I definitely wouldn't buy any more books with this narrator doing the reading.

Excellent story, awful narration

As always, Janet Macleod Trotter's attention to detail and storyline is faultless … but by chapter three I had to give up on this audiobook and buy a hardcopy to finish it. I couldn't listen to that narrator a second longer. I will make sure I don't buy any other book with this narrator, totally unbearable. I very much urge you to listen to the sample before you purchase this and if you don't make it through that, buy the hardcopy. I will be doing that in future!

Great story but read like a shopping list

In my opinion it is narrated by the most boring voiced person. She could make the most exciting book sound like a shopping list. I had to keep rewinding because I found myself switching off, it’s a real shame, because I love the author and the story is great.

Narration

I strongly recommend you listen to the sample I didn’t and was so disappointed with the narrator I found her voice and reading style dreadful like listing a long menu. Such a shame the story was good in fact that was the only reason I kept going to the end

Disappointing narration

This is a great story which has obviously been well researched. The narrator however really spoilt it. She rushed through it in a robotic voice so much so that I checked I had the correct speed. Her tone less speech really deflected from the story.
I see she has frequently been criticised in a number of different books . Find someone different please!

Another fabulous book

After reading reviews saying the narrator ruined it I was very much in two minds about getting this. I'm so glad i did.
The Narrator does talk perhaps more stiffly than others but she is the perfect one for this story, due to when it's set it defiantly benefited.

The context of the story was brilliant and Alice would be truley groundbreaking in her day. Enough suspense and although a fictional story as it was based on alot of facts from the time this makes it even more fascinating.

In the far Pashmina Mountains

The reader spoilt the story by her lack of expression and feeling in the characters. The boring way she read put me in mind of.a reading lesson in school. If the story hadn’t been so interesting I probably would not have completed reading it through to the end.

Terrible narrator.

A good enough story spoilt by an awful narration. Read in a monotone with an extremely irritating inflection on the last word of each sentence. Painful to listen to. Don't you listen to your narrators before you employ them?
