Publisher's Summary

Shocking, eye-opening and grimly fascinating, these are the true stories, patients and cases that have characterised a career spent treating mentally disordered offenders.

Listen to the end of the audiobook for an exclusive bonus chapter, written and read by the author.

As a forensic psychiatrist, it's Dr Das' job to treat and rehabilitate what the tabloids might call the 'criminally insane', many of whom assault, rob, rape and even kill. His work takes him to high-security prisons and securely locked hospital wards across the country, as well as inside courtrooms, giving evidence as an expert witness.

From the young woman who smothered her two-year-old nephew in a flash of psychosis, to the teenager who set his house on fire with his mother locked inside, Dr Das must delve into the minds of these violent offenders to elicit their symptoms of mental illness, understand their actions and prevent future atrocities.

In this honest, revealing and at times humorous memoir, Dr Das shares stories from his 15 years as a psychiatric doctor working with this dangerous clientele, detailing some of his most extreme, heart-breaking and bizarre cases - and how he's learned to live with his mistakes when the worse happens.

Compelling, enlightening and candid, if you enjoyed Unnatural Causes, Dark Side of the Mind or The Prison Doctor, you'll love In Two Minds.

Can’t wait for the next one!

What an interesting bunch of stories related by an incredibly interesting man.

I loved the balanced medical/scientific/legal context with stories about the actual people impacted by mental illness. There was also a little impatience, frustration and self reflection on the author’s too, demonstrative of his humanity. Plus humour! It was well placed to balance some of the inevitable sadness.

Please write the next one! I know there’s much more to tell, and I’ve only just begun getting into your YouTube channel. Also so interesting!

Outstanding, insightful and relateable

Really enjoyed this book and the approach to the subject. Many books regarding crime are quiet heavy with leaning toward the current popular opinions, leading to one sided and unhelpful summaries. This book was not like that. The author presented each case with a matter of factness that came with a sense of fresh, common-sense rich air and perfect comedic timing. Stripped of the emotions that create knee jerk reactions, we see the phenomena of mental health in crime as a series of avoidable or unavoidable actions and reactions. It was brilliant to hear cases which highlight the truth of poor mental health and the impact on individuals potential criminality. The author shows how mental health crises could have been avoided and more importantly, what can be learnt in the aftermath to reduce reoccurrences. The author honestly defines how true justice for the victim should be about creating a society where themselves and others are more likely to be safe. This book shows proof that decades of studies show behind every bad criminal, there was almost always first a sad child. The book shines a light on how society creates worse, more likely to reoffend criminals, by locking them away out of sight and mind, due to poor resources, blatant disregard or public misinformation. I strongly suggest this book for anyone who wants to learn what will reduce or stop offending and re-offending.
