أثار هذا الكتاب ل"طه حسين" الكثير من الجدل فور صدوره عام 1926 وهاجمه الكثير من النقاد فقد تناول طه حسين قضية الشعر الجاهلي من منظور الشك من حيث اللغة والمواضيع والنظم.

بداية اعتقد طه حسين أن الحياة الجاهلية لا بد وأن تُلتمس من القرآن الكريم وليس من الشعر الجاهلي الذي لا يصور تلك الحياة على حقيقتها كما تطرق لموضوع لهجات العرب العدنانية والتي تمثلها قبائل ربيعة وقيس وتميم، فأنكر أن يكون هذا الاختلاف في اللهجات العدنانية قد يأتي أيضًا بشعر عربي موحد وقد شكّك في لغة القحطانيين وفي اقترابها من لغة العدنانيين،و في لهجات القبائل العدنانية؛ بل شكّ في القبائل العدنانية نفسها وفي أننا لا نعرفها معرفة تامة !!

كما تحدَّث عن انتحال الشعر ونسبه لغيره وأسباب ذلك وغيرها من المواضيع الشائكة.
