In 1914, war feels far away to Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood. They're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that his best friend is in love with him too.

When Gaunt's mother asks him to enlist, he signs up immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings. But Ellwood and their classmates soon follow him to the front. Ellwood and Gaunt find love in the trenches – but just as war brought them together, it can tear them apart…
An epic, unforgettable love story between two soldiers in the First World War, In Memoriam is a breath-taking debut.

This book is a must read. loved every second of the book, i laughed, i cried and i took time to reflect. Every character in the book was/is important to show the trauma and effects of war. The relationship between Gaunt and Sidney while fraught with misunderstanding and lack of communication at the beginning got better (i love stories with happy endings). Some reviews say it's bitter-sweet but for me it's sweet. There is no war without trauma, and the last chapter showed progress in the healing journey.

A great novel; devastating, exquisitely wrought, read and researched. It’s a love story of two posh gay soldiers set during WWI and it is sheer perfection. Bravo!

Beautiful, horrific, poignant

A heart warming and simultaneously moving and sad novel that perfectly balances suspense, passion and plot twists with a happy ending. I binged this story and the description of the historical sources from which some of the scenes are derived at the end made it all the more enjoyable.

Passionate, gripping and moving

I loved this book. It was awful and beautiful and suspenseful and perfectly paced. An absolute joy to listen to. And an important reminder of the horrifying war that happened not that long ago.

It felt like I’d already read it
