Publisher's Summary

A deep dive into the immune system that will forever change how you think about your body - how it works and why it is both your greatest ally and most dangerous enemy - from the creator of the popular science YouTube channel Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell.

You wake up and feel a tickle in your throat. Your head hurts. You're mildly annoyed as you get the kids ready for school and dress for work yourself. Meanwhile, an utterly epic war is being fought, just below your skin. Millions are fighting and dying for you to be able to complain as you drink your cup of tea and head out the door.

So what, exactly, is your immune system?

Second only to the human brain in its complexity, it is one of the oldest and most critical facets of life on Earth. Without it, you would die within days. In Immune, Philipp Dettmer, the brains behind the most popular science channel on YouTube, takes listeners on a journey through the fortress of the human body and its defences. There is a constant battle of staggering scale raging within us, full of stories of invasion, strategy, defeat and noble self-sacrifice. In fact, in the time you've been listening to this, your immune system has probably identified and eradicated a cancer cell that started to grow in your body.

Each chapter delves deeply into an element of the immune system, including defences like antibodies and inflammation as well as threats like viruses, bacteria, allergies and cancer, as Dettmer reveals why boosting your immune system is actually nonsense, how parasites sneak their way past your body's defences, how viruses - including the coronavirus - work and what goes on in your wounds when you cut yourself.

Enlivened by immersive descriptions, Immune turns one of the most intricate, interconnected and confusing subjects - immunology - into a gripping adventure through an astonishing alien landscape.

Challenging what you know and think about your own body and how it defends you against all sorts of maladies and how it might also eventually be your own downfall, Immune is a vital and remarkably fun crash course in what is arguably, and increasingly, the most important system in the body.

Engaging info just in time

This book is just like the YouTube channel - engaging and informative, but delivered in a hilarious, addictive manner. Well structured, with good summaries, recaps and deep dives and foot notes where necessary, the quality of the information is great. Thorough, step by step, chapters build on knowledge as you progress through the book, so by the end - you actually feel like you have a decent grasp on what’s going on - whilst still understanding just how much you don’t know!
Well done to the entire team - the audio book is great, and the printed book is beautiful. Well done.

I love science

I really enjoyed the way the author tackled a difficult subject. If you have no interest in science or how your body works then this is not for you. I am on a quest to learn more about my bodies systems and how I can improve my health so this was amazing for me. I hope he writes more, especially interested in the brain.

Everyone should know this!

It starts off rather irritatingly stating the obvious but soon moves into new and updated territory. Particularly good at discussing the way one's immune system can be triggered into over reacting, or deceived by cancers by harking back to how single celled organisms rule the world - even when they bunch up to form humans.
I've listened to it twice & read the hard cover book once. That's how good it is.

A great introduction to a fascinating topic

Really enjoyed the level of complexity and feeling like I now have a passing understanding of something as important as our immune system.

Awesome!

What a surprise to find myself chuckling my way through a book on immunology. Best read in conjunction with the illustrations in the printed book.

Incredible easy to understand

Such a delightful read/listen. Easy to grasp concepts, very playful with words, humour in complexity where needed. Overall, very worth a read to get a good understanding on immunology.

Clear without missing the details!

I love the analogies used in this book. Philipp has opened my eyes to the wonders of the immune system and I'm so thankful. It reads like a sci-fi book - detailing a battle between your body and intruders. I love it.

A good book for these times

As an immuniocompromised person with Waldenströms Macroglobulinemia, visuses and particularly Sars Covid 2 is scary for me, but this book expanded my very limited knowledge so well and enjoyably. Loved it.

The best audiobook I've heard in years

This book is so dense in information, and yet the author and narrator have made it emminently digestible and entertaining. the Author uses excellent metaphors and jokes to bring the subject to life, and the sometimes deadpan but always engaging delivery by the narrator makes it all the more funny and entertaining.

As a science educator I have learned a lot from this book, both about the immune system, as well as science communication, which is so beautifully modelled here.
