 Das 1849 verfasste und ein Jahr später in Karl Leonard Biernatzkis "Volksbuch auf das Jahr 1850" veröffentlichte "Immensee" zählt zum frühen Novellenwerk Storms und ist gleichzeitig ein früher Höhepunkt in seinem Schaffen. Der alte Reinhard Werner erinnert sich darin an die anrührende Kinder- und Jugendliebe zur fünf Jahre jüngeren Elisabeth. Eine Liebe, die sich für ihn nie erfüllte und in deren Folge er sich für seinen Beruf, das Sammeln von Märchen und Volksliedern entschied.
