Ein beschwerlicher und gefährlicher Ritt durch die Arabische Wüste führt Kara ben Nemsi, Halef, Sir David und einen weiteren Begleiter in das Dorf Nachi am Rand des Hadschar-Gebirges. Dort treffen sie auf völlig ungewöhnliche Erscheinungen, die sich vermutlich nur im Zusammenhang mit der von ihnen gesuchten Pflanze erklären lassen. Als sie schließlich selbst in das Tal der Herba Juvenilis gelangen, wird ihnen deren Gefährlichkeit deutlich vor Augen geführt. Nur durch den Einsatz des vierten Begleiters, bei dem es sich um einen Mitarbeiter des Royal Institute of Biology in London handelt, wird es der Gruppe möglich, diese Pflanze erfolgreich zu bekämpfen, ohne sie aber vermutlich für alle Zeiten beseitigen zu können.
