Renate Stöckel hatte ihren Ferienaufenthalt in Dangast lange geplant. Seit Jahren war sie Stammgast in dem kleinen Badeort am Jadebusen. Das neue Bauprojekt des «Nordseeparks» hatte sie zunächst abgeschreckt, aber sie wollte sich nicht von den Negativbeurteilungen beeinflussen lassen und sich selbst ein Bild machen. Zum Wochenende war ein Familientreffen geplant und Renate freute sich, ihre Kinder und Enkel wiederzusehen. Leider schaffte sie es nur bis vor ihre Wohnungstür. Danach war sie spurlos verschwunden.
Fast zeitgleich geschieht ein brutaler Mord in Varel. Die taffe Kommissarin Kim und ihr mürrischer Kollege Koller tappen lange im Dunkeln.
