Epitteto (50-130 d.C.), portato a Roma dalla Frigia come schiavo, dopo la liberazione si dedicò allo studio della filosofia, seguendo la dottrina stoica.
La sua dottrina morale, contrariamente a quello che si crede dello stoicismo, è più adatta all'uomo comune, e questo manuale contiene delle vere gemme per diventare "dei Socrate", come dice lui stesso, o almeno avviarsi a farlo.
La traduzione è di Giacomo Leopardi, che ha scritto anche un preambolo a raccomandare questa filosofia che lui stesso ha praticato a lungo.
