1931. Sullo scalone di Capodimonte, nella gelida alba di un autunno umido di pioggia, viene ritrovato un bambino morto. È Tetté, un piccolo scugnizzo senza famiglia né amici. Il freddo, la fame o una malattia sembrano le cause più probabili del decesso, ma il commissario Ricciardi non si accontenta e da solo prende a scavare nelle vite di cui nessuno si cura, di cui nessuno sa niente.
