Il titolo italiano (quello orgiale è”Rodney Stone”, dal nome del protagonista) allude a un mistero “gotico”, ma è in realtà un po' fuorviante perchè la storia del fantasma di Cliffe Royal, castello situato tra Brighton e Londra, non è altro che una cornice per trasportare il lettore in un momento storico accuratamente descritto, in cui la flotta inglese, comandata da Nelson, si trovava a combattere il grande nemico Bonaparte. In quel periodo prese piede, in Inghilterra, lo sport del pugilato, e l'autore ne descrive le luci e le ombre, non nascondendo la sua simpatia per tale sport, quando praticato con onore e lealtà. Ma la trama della storia è comunque ben congegnata, anche se le descrizioni ambientali e storiche ne fanno in qualche modo, ogni tanto, perdere le tracce: e in questo, la penna del romanziere non è in niente inferiore rispetto alle sue trame poliziesche che siamo stati abituati a leggere.Cornice musicale di Kevin Mac Leod.
