I protagonisti sono Rospo, Tasso, Talpa, che rappresentano la società rurale inglese dell'epoca. L'autore, Kenneth Grahame (1859-1932) lo scrisse per il figlio che soffriva di gravi problemi di salute e che morì poi suicida a venti anni. Nel 1909 Grahame si licenziò poi dalla carica di segretario della Banca d'Ighilterra. Si ritirò in campagna dove, come i personaggi del suo romanzo, passò gran parte del suo tempo navigando sul Tamigi. Il libro è divenuto famoso anche perché adattato in un famoso cartone animato della Disney, Mr Toad. Cornice musicale è la colonna sonora del film.
