L'ultimo romanzo, incompiuto, di Kafka, la cui stesura ebbe inizio nel gennaio 1922 (l'autore non ha ancora quarant'anni e ne mancano due alla morte per tubercolosi faringea) e proseguì fino al settembre dello stesso anno. Non esiste una versione definitiva dell'autore che anzi dispose che il manoscritto fosse distrutto.
Più che un romanzo "Il castello" si può definire un insieme di frammenti in cui il personaggio K., arrivato a un non-luogo, un misero villaggio immerso nel freddo, tenta di avvicinarsi alla meta, il Castello appunto. Sono frammenti di "vuoto", "stanchezza", "solitudine", presentimenti di una non-vita che attende l'autore nei meandri dell'ultima meta.
