التكفيرُ إلغاءُ إنسانيةِ الإنسان. فمن يختلف عنّي في العقيدة والمذهب أراه شخصًا حقيرًا ينبغي تطهير الأرض من رجاسته. إنه يلوّث معتقداتي، في حين أريدها نظيفة، طاهرة، لا تشوبها شائبة. ولعل التكفير يتجاوز العنصرية بمراحل. فهذه الأخيرة قد تستبقي المرء على قيد الحياة في الوقت الذي تضطهده وتنزل به صنوف الإذلال. أما التكفير فهو نزعة استئصالية ترمي إلى إبادة المختلف في سبيل الحفاظ على مثالية مزعومة تقف نقيضًا لمن يجسِّد الشرور والخبائث كلَّها.

ولقد كانت جماعة الخوارج أول نزعة إرهابية في التاريخ العربي على الرغم من ديموقراطية مبادئهم السياسية. فكثيرًا ما يتناقض النظر والعمل، كما تتناقض العقيدة والسلوك، والمعوَّل عليه في ذلك كله كيفية الممارسة، وليس المبدأ بحد ذاته. فهذه المسيحية دين الرحمة والمحبة استحالت، عبر التطبيق المشوَّه، إلى ديانة الحقد والكراهية في بعض المراحل التاريخية.

وقد يظن الأكثرون أن المثالية في الإيمان والتفكير تعني حتمًا المثالية في السلوك، والحقيقة أن هناك هوّة بين عالمين يتقاربان في بعض الأوضاع الحضارية، ويتباعدان في أوضاع أخرى. فلا تقل إن مبادئي سامية، فأنا إذن شخص يتعالى على الصغائر. بل قلْ لي كيف تمارس هذه المبادىء، فأصدّق أنك شخص مؤمن بهذه العقيدة أو تلك، وأنك تسعى إلى تجسيدها من خلال سلوك يومي عماده المحبة الحاضنة لكل اختلاف.
