Questo primo romanzo del Ciclo di Venere, del 1934, opera meno famosa dell'autore di Tarzan si inserisce nel filone della costruzione di un mondo utopico/distopico, filone iniziato da H. G. Wells nella Macchina del Tempo nel 1902.
In questo caso la società abita su Venere, pianeta che, a causa della fitta coltre di nubi, è stato sempre sconosciuto ai vari astronomi e scienziati, e ipotizzato come inadatto alla vita.
Lo stesso autore ha scritto altri cicli di romanzi di fantascienza, come il ciclo di Pellucidar e il ciclo di Marte. I suoi romanzi ricoprono un posto importante nella storia della fantascienza e offrono vari spunti di riflessione. Cornicemusicale: "suite di Venere" di Holst.
