Publisher's Summary

In the vein of Mindy Kaling, Ali Wong and Amy Poehler, a collection of hilarious personal essays, and poems on the subjects of insecurity, fame, anxiety and much more from the charming and wickedly funny creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Rachel Bloom has felt abnormal and out of place her whole life. In this exploration of what she thinks makes her 'different', she's come to realise that a lot of people also feel this way - even people who she otherwise thought were 'normal'.

In a collection of laugh-out-loud funny essays, all told in the unique voice (sometimes singing voice) that made her a star, Rachel writes about everything from her love of Disney, OCD and depression, weirdness and female friendships to the story of how she didn't poop in the toilet until she was four years old. It's a hilarious, smart and infinitely relatable collection (except for the pooping thing).

Very funny and very normal 10/10

Unlike that horrible twitter comment, this book does indeed prove that Rachel has talent. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and fun life stories. Sincerely, a 20 year old from Australia who thinks you're pretty neat :)

Funny and meaningful

Hilarious and deep, pure Rachel Bloom. Do you miss Crazy Ex Girlfriend? Then this audio book will ease your feelings of loss. Do you like funny books about mental illness? Then this book will help you and the voices in your head laugh through the pain. Do you like good old fashioned comedy? Then this book may finally convince you that women are funny, you misogynistic jerk. The material is awesome and Bloom’s performance is note perfect. I related, I chortled, I empathised, I admired. Definitely give this book a listen.

Brilliantly delivered and both honest and funny

I've been a huge fan of Rachel Bloom since seeing her music videos many years ago. This book delivers the same style of humour, honesty and emotion as her previous work. The delivery of the book is also great, with several ad-libs for the audio version and a brilliantly realised musical section. You could really feel the emotion around her experiences and that made the book so much more engaging and affecting. As someone with mental health issues I appreciate her willingness to talk about her own struggles both through her childhood and adult life. The feeling of not being normal has followed me through the years and hearing about it from people who've powered through and achieved so much is so encouraging. It was also great to hear some of the behind-the-scenes details around Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - a show that has a special place in my heart (it's the best depiction of mental illness and BPD I've seen in any media). A great listen by an amazing performer.

Just a generally entertaining person to listen to

She's just funny and also it was interesting to get an insight into the industry she's in, from the perspective of a normal down to earth person. She highlights the misogyny and ridiculousness of the industry but makes in funny, not depressing. Anyone who like the show crazy ex girlfriend will like this

THE BEST AUDIOBOOK FOR WEIRDOS

This is the funniest and most heartfelt audiobook out. I laughed until I cried, then I was crying for real, then laughing again! Rachel Bloom is a comical, musical and literary genius. The Liza Minnelli sorting cap, the theme park for adults - hilarious! Being normal completely overrated anyway. I wish there were more books like this to dive into.

A self-indulgent mess

Since I loved CXG, I thought I'd really enjoy this book. But there are very few stories from the production of CXG. The book is highly personal and not that interesting. I struggled to make it through as Rachel recounted her toilet training or read her childhood diary, thinking it would get better. But the entire book reads as a strange, whiney self-centered account of uniteresting events.

It was amazing and I loved it.

I own the book but since Rachel herself was narrating and there are songs and poems throughout so I wanted to listen. Rachel never disappoints. As having been a misfit, theatre kid also I loved hearing how she rose to fame and hearing all the trivial stories, the stories that are kind of the edge of the experience. Her dogs narrates her winning an award. I love the abstract cognitive dissonance to her stories. I love the sex and the cheekiness and the vulnerability. I love the interesting narrative for a memoir / biography and how it still plays parody to its genre. Who doesn't love to read a little in to the mind of someone well read, funny, human, parodies, sings, dances, writes, directs and rhymes? Recommend.

Perfect listen for pandemic winter months

This book, which is gloriously read by the author herself, was exactly what I needed to listen to in this dreary cold December marked by the global coronavirus pandemic. Rachel Bloom manages to be honest, heartbreaking, hilarious, entertaining, and very relatable. This audiobook brightened up my day, made me laugh out loud, and will definitely be listened to again and again.
