Story
Truths from an Unreliable Witness is a fiercely honest and wryly funny memoir of melancholy, love, marriage, the loss of love and marriage, homelessness, of hotel rooms strewn with empty mini-bar bottles of vodka, of waking from a two-week coma, of putrid drug dens and using a jungle to confront yourself. It is about hitting rock bottom and then realising you are only halfway down. Ultimately, it's about hanging on to your last straw of sanity and finding laughter in the darkest of times. You may want to sit down for this....

Story
To see the world through Jenny Slate's eyes is to see it as though for the first time, shimmering with strangeness and possibility. As she will remind you, we live on an ancient ball that rotates around a bigger ball made up of lights and gases that are science gases, not farts (don't be immature). Heartbreak, confusion and misogyny stalk this blue-green sphere, yes, but it is also a place of wild delight and unconstrained vitality, a place where we can start living as soon as we are born, and we can be born at any time.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Publisher's Summary
In the vein of Mindy Kaling, Ali Wong and Amy Poehler, a collection of hilarious personal essays, and poems on the subjects of insecurity, fame, anxiety and much more from the charming and wickedly funny creator of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Rachel Bloom has felt abnormal and out of place her whole life. In this exploration of what she thinks makes her 'different', she's come to realise that a lot of people also feel this way - even people who she otherwise thought were 'normal'.
In a collection of laugh-out-loud funny essays, all told in the unique voice (sometimes singing voice) that made her a star, Rachel writes about everything from her love of Disney, OCD and depression, weirdness and female friendships to the story of how she didn't poop in the toilet until she was four years old. It's a hilarious, smart and infinitely relatable collection (except for the pooping thing).
Critic Reviews
"It's nice to know someone as talented as Rachel is also pretty weird. If you're like me and love Rachel Bloom, this hilarious, personal book will make you love her even more." (Mindy Kaling)
"Rachel is one of the funniest, bravest people of our generation and this book blew me away." (Amy Schumer)

Brilliantly delivered and both honest and funny
I've been a huge fan of Rachel Bloom since seeing her music videos many years ago. This book delivers the same style of humour, honesty and emotion as her previous work. The delivery of the book is also great, with several ad-libs for the audio version and a brilliantly realised musical section. You could really feel the emotion around her experiences and that made the book so much more engaging and affecting. As someone with mental health issues I appreciate her willingness to talk about her own struggles both through her childhood and adult life. The feeling of not being normal has followed me through the years and hearing about it from people who've powered through and achieved so much is so encouraging. It was also great to hear some of the behind-the-scenes details around Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - a show that has a special place in my heart (it's the best depiction of mental illness and BPD I've seen in any media). A great listen by an amazing performer.

She's just funny and also it was interesting to get an insight into the industry she's in, from the perspective of a normal down to earth person. THE BEST AUDIOBOOK FOR WEIRDOS
This is the funniest and most heartfelt audiobook out. I laughed until I cried, then I was crying for real, then laughing again! Rachel Bloom is a comical, musical and literary genius. The Liza Minnelli sorting cap, the theme park for adults - hilarious! Being normal completely overrated anyway. I wish there were more books like this to dive into.

A self-indulgent mess
Since I loved CXG, I thought I'd really enjoy this book. But there are very few stories from the production of CXG. The book is highly personal and not that interesting. I struggled to make it through as Rachel recounted her toilet training or read her childhood diary, thinking it would get better. But the entire book reads as a strange, whiney self-centered account of uniteresting events.

It was amazing and I loved it.
I own the book but since Rachel herself was narrating and there are songs and poems throughout so I wanted to listen. Rachel never disappoints. As having been a misfit, theatre kid also I loved hearing how she rose to fame and hearing all the trivial stories, the stories that are kind of the edge of the experience. Her dogs narrates her winning an award. I love the abstract cognitive dissonance to her stories. I love the sex and the cheekiness and the vulnerability. I love the interesting narrative for a memoir / biography and how it still plays parody to its genre. Who doesn't love to read a little in to the mind of someone well read, funny, human, parodies, sings, dances, writes, directs and rhymes? Recommend.
