Editorial reviews

Funny, heartwarming, and sad, I, Nigel Dorking tells the story of a gifted boy going through a tough time after his parent's divorce. His mother is about to marry a man he hates, his father is ignoring him, his younger brother is profoundly disabled, and he can't stop wetting the bed. For all that, the book is much funnier than you might expect, and the final result is deeply moving. Performer Jasper Garner Gore does an excellent job capturing the precocious, self-serious Nigel and the assortment of strange characters around him, while whimsical music brightens the story.

Publisher's Summary

Nigel Dorking's parents are divorced, and his father has remarried and has two stepdaughters. Nigel is a lonely, precocious child who idolizes his absent father and longs to have more to do with him, but he has a bed-wetting problem and is anxious to hide the fact from his dad. That's not his only problem though: his mother is about to marry a man Nigel detests, a large, loud Scottish man called Gordon. Things are further complicated by Ivan, Nigel's little brother, who is profoundly disabled and utterly dependent. Gradually, Nigel comes to realize that his father, the man he hero-worships, is a failure as a father, and it is Gordon who deserves his affection and trust.

Critic Reviews

"It's a funny book. But also warm, wise, sharply observed, meticulously executed and, at times, deeply moving." (Herald-Sun)

Poignant and touching story

I Nigel Dorking was the first audiobook I ever listened to. I remember at about aged 11 feeling like Nigel himself was just like me. I learnt that things are not always what they seem and to not judge the bullied as second-rate, an issue I was experiencing as I was bullied and a bully at the same time.
Jasper Garner Gore's voice was and still is perfect for this book and I wish he'd gone on to do many others. maybe in time.

Please audible ask him to come back and narrate more..

Definitely recommend to young audiences and older ones wanting to remember what it was ACTUALLY like to be a child again.

Edit: I put up this review halfway through, probably should have fully re-listened to it first. Umm... look it's a bit graphic at points, particular the part about the bed-wetting contraption. There is an unnecessary fixation on Nigel's, grade 6 penis, and it's just uncomfortable to listen to.
