Publisher's Summary

We are familiar with the medical opinion that a daily glass of wine is good for the health and also the rival opinion that any more than a glass or two will set us on the road to ruin. Whether or not good for the body, Scruton argues, wine, drunk in the right frame of mind, is definitely good for the soul. And there is no better accompaniment to wine than philosophy. By thinking with wine, you can learn not only to drink in thoughts but to think in draughts.

This good-humoured book offers an antidote to the pretentious clap-trap that is written about wine today and a profound apology for the drink on which civilisation has been founded.

In vino veritas.

Slow start, exhilarating finish

There’s a lot here. You may disagree with much of what he says, but listening to Scruton will always result in pondering these questions for yourself.

It’s just like savouring a nice wine.

Bottoms Up!

Sir Roger Scruton has a unique way of bringing those elusive deep thoughts to the surface to see. This is what happens when you put this polymath and a glass or two of fine french wine together. I enjoyed the chapters even more after joining in on the fun and wetting my palate too. I look forward to listening to it again to catch all of the humor and insight.

Wonderful insights.

A fascinating and stimulating book, somewhat spoiled by the rushed and slightly frantic narration. I will now buy the hard copy in the expectation of a more fulfilling experience.

An educative listen

Wide ranging, informative, and helpful if you want to truly appreciate wine. But, needs to include translation of the French and Latin that he uses so liberally.
