About this listen

Here I am: tall and broad, shaved head, had my nose broken three times fighting. Black suit, white shirt, the big-city homicide detective. I've led investigations into serial killings, child abductions, organized crime hits and domestic murders. But beneath the suit, I've got an Om symbol in the shape of a Buddha tattooed on my right bicep. It balances the tattoo on my left ribs: Better to die on your feet than live on your knees. That's how I choose to live my life.

As a cop, I got paid to catch killers and I learned what doing it can cost you. It cost me marriages and friendships. It cost me my reputation. They tell you not to let a case get personal, but I think it has to. Each one has taken a piece out of me and added a piece, until there's only pieces.

I catch killers—it's what I do. It's who I am.

Gary Jubelin was Australia's most celebrated homicide detective, leading investigations into the disappearance of William Tyrrell, the serial killing of three Aboriginal children in Bowraville and the brutal gangland murder of Terry Falconer. During his 34-year career, former Detective Chief Inspector Jubelin also ran the crime scene following the Lindt Cafe siege, investigated the death of Caroline Byrne and recovered the body of Matthew Leveson. In 2020, Jubelin was found guilty of illicitly recording conversations during the Tyrrell investigation. This is his story.

We are protected by those like Gary, most of us can live a life oblivious to the real world. Best book so far a Jube fan for sure now.

It was well written and easy to listen to, its educational about the evolution of crimal investigation, the court system, justice or the lack of and its processes. It was riviting and a stark reminder of the price paid in the pursuit of justice for all stake holders.

Could not stop listening

Loved the book - which was well narrated. Huge respect for Mr Jubelin and his determination to find answers. Really disappointed by the way he was treated by NSW Police.

Brilliant.

Gary Jubelin did not deserve the way he was treated after he gave everything he had to the NSW police force, and they treated him like a common criminal. I stand by Gary all the way. Read it, you won't regret it!

Brilliant book, gutsy, gritty, honest

Jubelin is quite the character, empathic, determined and forthright. Whilst I can't say I agree with him on everything (quite frankly I find his opposition to a legal right to silence abhorrent), but he is so earnest in laying bare the impact and influence of his experiences on his psyche that you are not left wondering why he has the opinions that he does. The stories in this book are engaging (superbly acted by Rob Carlton), and the insight into the inner workings of the Homicide squad are fascinating. Enjoyable listen.

Fascinating

This is a gripping and informative look at the life of an Aussie detective. You follow him through his life and career and his internal struggles. This is one of the best narrated books I've heard on Audible. Loved it.
