Publisher's Summary

In Matheson's vampire classic I Am Legend, a plague has decimated the world and transformed the unfortunate survivors into bloodthirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire hungry for Neville's blood. By day he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?

Nothing like the movie

If it wasn't titles I am legend and had a pic of WIll Smith on the cover I would say, it's a little like that I am legend movie but not.... seriously you could make a movie out of this book and not get the two films mixed up. The book felt very short and the Other stories are not worth the time.

Fun & thrilling story

the story of I AM LENGEND in the first half of this book is terrific! The narration is emotional and believable.

however, the 2nd half of the book features short, anecdotal stories. They could have chosen a better narrator for the second half. I found his voice annoying and distracting. I found it hard to enjoy or focus on the stories and eventually I had to end without finishing

¡Unexpected!

Having seen the movie I sort of expected a similar story line and developing of events, but I was surprised to find a more immersively psychological and emphatic unfolding of Robert Neville's survival on earth: The last of his kind!

If you are up for an obscure and thrilling story, this is for you!

Not what I expected

if you are expecting the movie, turn around now. if you want an original take on vampires continue on. the story itself is an interesting take on a post epidemic lonely mind. the short stories that follow are hit and miss, some are attention grabbing and trippy while the others are, to me, completely rabbit trails away from reality itself.

still so relevant

I was familiar with all the later versions of the story but this is easily my favorite. so personal, heartbreaking and timeless. I honestly didn't know fear, confusion and humor could coexist so enticingly. listen on!

It’s just okay

I did not listen to the short stories on here because I read the reviews before me and it seemed like that would be the way to go. (Too many negative reviews)
I Am Legend was a decent story. There were parts of the story: the ending, the woman, and the close call: that I really enjoyed.
But it being one character through most of the book made it uninteresting at times. This book has made me realize that I really enjoy characters and their development because in this one there is only one true character to get to know and I feel like maybe that wasn’t enough for me.

First half great, second not so much

The I am legend portion of this novel was great, a lot different than the movie however.

I wasn’t impressed with the “other stories.”

I am legend was an interesting listen, the rest no

the additional short stories seemingly of the same genre were no where's near the quality and seemed diluted, and difficult to finish

Narrator was dull

Just couldn't get into the book. The narrator was too monotone for my liking. Really took away from the story as a whole.

Dystopian Crusoe

Movie really messed up this one. Dystopian Robinson Crusoe tale is much darker. short stories are really nice bonus, some excellent ones like the last. Especially for a psychiatrist like myself. Yuri does wonders, sometimes like a bukowskian poetry, sometimes funny or eerie.

great

I'm really surprised to see so many complaints in the reviews, I feel it's a case of misguided expectations. it's different to the films, and stands alone as an incredible and realistic story. Yes the character is deeply flawed, but in light of circumstances it's understandable. And most importantly, he grows. Matheson does an amazing job at putting us into the story, as always. It's immersive.

I am Legend finishes with chapter 21.

Robertson Dean's performance is incredible - he's great at covering Matheson and I was excited to see his name. The complaints against his voice I can't fathom. Yuri was also great, and I almost didn't carry on because of the reviews but I'm glad I did. The short stories are a bonus and I don't think it's fair to mark down because of them. I enjoyed them, it's nice to see how Matheson develops his skills through his short works.

I love both the films and the book, but the book has my top vote. It really captures the emotion and turmoil.

Main book good,

The main story is good, but if you think it's going to be exactly the same as the film you will be disappointed.
However the additional stories after it I found a little tedious

Narrator overdid it

The narrator was too dramatic, pretensious and therefore annoying. The book was ok, although the writing felt very oldfashioned with binge smoking, tons of whisky and almost unstoppable animal like sexual desire towards female vampires. i didnt even attemt to listen to the other stories because the next narrator killed it at the very beginning.

A good story, audio book performance (or Audible app) had some strange pauses

This audio book has I Am Legend and also number of other short stories. They’re a nice bonus but I bought it for the former so that’s what il reviewing: On the whole a good story. Vampirism as a germ is an interesting idea and given a patina of scientific respectability. Robert Neville, the protagonist, is drawn well. The audio book had a number of pauses and glitches but I think that’s mostly technical issues in the Audible app not the recording itself.

Hard to listen to

The narrator really acts out - some times to much. The fact that more stories are included came as a surprise to me. If I had known that I’d have settled for the other version of the audiobook.

People who like bad narration.

Would you be willing to try another book from Richard Matheson? Why or why not?

Yes

Would you be willing to try another one of Robertson Dean and Yuri Rasovsky ’s performances?

No, the narration of the stories after I am Legend was so bad I stopped listening.

A depressing monologue

I had no problem with the narration, but the story - of a line man's thoughts trying to come to terms with being the sole survivor on earth, really started to get me down. There were only 2 upbeat parts to the story, which were quickly quashed. I thought the ending was a bit stupid. I can see why the story was so radically changed for the film.
