Malthe på 16 har mistet sin mor, men han nægter at dvæle ved det. Det gør for ondt. Han vælger i stedet at feste og drikke og læse sine elskede bøger. Og bare at komme væk fra alt.
Og pludselig byder den oplagte mulighed sig! Han får en tjans med at sortere gamle bøger på et bibliotek på et gammelt gods i løbet af sommerferien. Malthe tager imod tilbuddet med kyshånd.
