Publisher's Summary

She went off the trail for only a moment....

Twenty-two-year-old Eileen goes missing while hiking in the remote Ashlough Forest. Five days later, her camera is discovered washed downriver, containing bizarre photos taken after her disappearance.

Chris wants to believe Eileen is still alive. When the police search is abandoned, he and four of his friends create their own search party to scour the mountain range. As they stray farther from the hiking trails and the unsettling discoveries mount, they begin to believe they’re not alone in the forest...and that Eileen’s disappearance wasn’t an accident.

By that point, it’s too late to escape.

great narration, average story

Predictable story. Most characters are broad, unlikeable, cringe-inducing caricatures, but the wild mountain descriptions are very good.

I never leave reviews but....

I've listened to a few of this author's books before and I thought they were pretty good. A little predictable but good. This book however, I loved it. So much that I'm writing my first review ever.

I suppose it's a bit of a slow burn, but it held my interest throughout the entire book. There were a few parts that made me shudder and cringe but not to the point where I had to stop the book.

It's hard to say what I love about this book exactly because I think everything worked really well together. It's suspenseful and the mystery goes up until the last few chapters. I listened to it in two days. Also I'm bad at writing reviews so I hope this helps?

I thought the narrator was great as well. I thought she did a nice job giving each character a distinct voice.

Slow build is too slow.

I’ve gotten a few books by this author, and while she’s not a bad author she is a very old fashioned horror author. By this I mean she has a lot of build up.. but not a lot of payoff. That’s this books biggest problem. Is a lot of “omg I saw the monster I better run! Now I’m hiding! Oh no it found me! I better run!” over and over and over with no real payoff. I’m little over 3 hours in and I’m still waiting for something to hook me.

Awesome listen!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There is just enough spooky and suspense to keep you interested. Everything is not as it seems...
Ms. Coates books just keep getting better and better. And Angela Dawe is an excellent narrator.

Intense and suspenseful thriller;!

Really good story; won't say too much, but my expectations of this book were definitely met. A scary & suspenseful thrill-ride of a story!

Horrible

Just silly. Unlikeable characters and unrealistic storyline. Made it through about an hour...Can I have my hour back?

Couldn't finish it

1. Supposedly takes place in America. Terminology is all wrong. I felt I was reading a story about what a foreigner would think America was like.
2. The characters were shallow. No depth and could not find them to be relatable at all. Their reasoning behind actions were not clear and I was left guessing as to motivations for actions and words spoken.

These were my main problems with the book. I think a rewrite and adding some depth to characters would make a good story, more entertaining. Though I couldn't see past these flaws, the story was interesting.

Where does this story even take place?

I started listening and the mystery of where the heck the story was supposed to be taking place was more puzzling than the improbable story. Every reference to the setting is either locations that are seemingly completely made up or completely nonspecific (“the country” or “the state”). 15 chapters in and not a mention of where in the world we are. Characters speak as if their from the UK or Australia (referring to their “mobile” rather than cellphone or “holiday” rather than vacation. But the author also has them say things that suggest it’s possibly in the USA or Canada. If a story focuses on a dangerous wilderness, geography matters. It’s the kind of thing that might be forgivable in a B-movie screenplay where the visuals create setting, but in a novel, not specifying where the story takes place is amateurish. It’s something I’d expect from student work, not a published author. Most of the characters are just sketches and the one who isn’t is just flat out unlikable, so the story being written as if the author lacks access to a GLOBE is too distracting.

Mind. Blown.

This story was not that I expected, and that is a good thing. It kept me hanging until the end with twists everywhere.

Another great book

I've been waiting for a new book and this did not disappoint. i was gripped by the story and couldn't wait to get back to find out if the monster had claimed another victim. Even the ending threw me a little so if your thinking about getting this title I can recommend it. Now the only problem is waiting till Darcy writes her next book

A refreshing read

Completely different from what I expected. Well developed characters, no lazy sterotypes. I love the husky voice of the narrator and I can't wait to read another book from Darcy Coates. ❤

Welcome to headache land

Overall I liked the story. Often with horrors and thrillers I can guess who the baddie is from early on and at least in this one I was unable to until near the end. The main characters resolution of the issue was also surprising.
Heads up for anyone interested, the book has ablist slurs in, which aren't addressed at all, and the female characters (out side of the main one) are all tropey stereotypes though I can see that the author has tried to broaden their characters somewhat as the story moves along.
All in all 3/5 so not bad.
