Publisher's Summary

The beloved modern classic, released as an unabridged audiobook for the first time in 2019.

In the land of Ingary, where seven league boots and invisibility cloaks exist, young Sophie Hatter catches the unwelcome attention of the Witch of the Waste and is put under a spell....

Deciding she has nothing more to lose, Sophie makes her way to the moving castle that hovers on the hills above her town, Market Chipping. But the castle belongs to the dreaded Wizard Howl, whose appetite, they say, is satisfied only by the souls of young girls....

There Sophie meets Michael, Howl’s apprentice, and Calcifer the fire demon, with whom she agrees a pact. Her entanglements with Calcifer, Howl and Michael and her quest to break her curse come alive with Diana Wynne Jones’s unique combination of magic, humour and imagination.

Better then the movie.

I find I like the books better then the movies and Howl’s moving castle was no different. I found the book more interesting and more depth. I thought it was just going to be the movie but was happy how much better it is.

Delightful

I first discovered this story last year and loved reading it so much. The delivery of this performance only enhanced an already charming text. Absolutely wonderful!

Studio Ghibli made me read this book

I loved it. The performance was fantastic as Kristin Atherton is able to give each character a distinct voice. The story flows on well and shows many different levels that the beloved movie did not (that's the way with movies I guess. Some of the aspects would ruin the immersion of Studio Ghibli) The ending wraps everything up with a ribbon on top and it is absolutely a story that my future children will read.

Magical

Such a beautiful story. And beautifully narrated. I've read the book before, but hearing Howl's voice in a Welsh accent adds another dimension to his character.

One of my Favourites

I loved this one. It's long been one of my favourite books, but was available in audio only as an abridged version. I was pleased to find it in the full version and the narrator was impeccable. Deep Secret is also a gem, so now, please give us Fire and Hemlock.

Fantastic

This book was narrated beautifully. Kristin Atherton portrayed each of the character’s voices in a way that enabled me to see the character perfectly. This story isn’t just for children but is a nice light hearted story for an adult too. I didn’t want to story to end because I’m interested in seeing where Howels story began. Overall, definitely worth the read 😊

Brilliant.

Perfectly read. Never thought I'd find it more compelling than the film - but I did. Jones is an incredible storyteller who works on so many levels.

Audible: write the name of the chapters!

Great book, lovely performance. Absolutely recommended to dreamers and magic lovers. Only flaw is that the chapters on the app do not correspond to the ones narrated and they are only written with a number. Audible... please, write titles and check them before publishing. Enjoy a wonderful book!

Really nice revisit to a classic

Kristin Atherton has a great voice, which can make action scenes crack and bring out nuanced, layered characters. I am extremely glad she read a favourite book of my childhood - it was lovely to revisit it, and she does it justice. I hope she will work on other DWJ books, because this one was brilliant.

As good as I remember

I have read this book in the past and have come to see if the audiobook is just as good. Spoiler alert - it is. I have enjoyed the narration by Kristin Atherton. She makes voices of the characters believable and her narration stimulated my imagination. This is a nice children's story and also a calming experience for adults.

Excellent performance of this lovely book!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this performance of Diana Wynn Jones's classic book, Kristin Atherton is a lovely narrator, and I hope that she will be able to read the next two titles in this short series. I've read the book, seen the animated movie (not quite the same as the book but very good), and was so happy that the unabridged audiobook has just been released. I've listened to John Sessions read the next in the series, sadly that was an abridged version. I'll be looking for other books read by Kristen Atherton.

Hilarious and Heartwarming

SO. GOOD. There was so much life and personality with these characters, all beautifully performed by Atherton. My friend and I spent the last two weeks in isolation after getting back from Europe before heading home listening to this. I'd raved about the book to her before but she'd always forget to read it, so when we were in isolation and I saw that audible FINALLY had a full version of the book instead of the abridged version, how could I resist? We both enjoyed the story and the performance immensely, and I don't think either of us can fully enjoy the Ghibli adaptation after listening to it! As charming and wonderful as movie!Howl is, WHERE IS HIS PERSONALITY?? WHERE IS THE SASS???? WHERE IS HIS WELSH ACCENT????? And more importantly, WHERE IS SOPHIE'S MAGIC?????? The book is incredible and I'd recommend to anyone and everyone if I could. If you've only watched the movie and are curious about what the book is like, just give it a try, you won't regret it.

Unabridged with great narration

Delighted to find an unabridged version of this fantastic story. Brilliantly narrated too. Kristin Atherton vividly portrays the various characters. Throughly enjoyed it and looking forward too more unabridged versions like this in the series.

Loved it!

I loved this version of the story. Totally worth getting and it brought a smile to my face being transported back into the land of Ingary. I really hope we get the rest of the trilogy.
