Publisher's Summary

Your past and your family can haunt you like nothing else… A hilarious and terrifying new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Final Girl Support Group.

Every childhood home is haunted, and each of us are possessed by our parents.

When their parents die at the tail end of the coronavirus pandemic, Louise and Mark Joyner are devastated but nothing can prepare them for how bad things are about to get. The two siblings are almost totally estranged, and couldn't be more different. Now, however, they don't have a choice but to get along. The virus has passed, and both of them are facing bank accounts ravaged by the economic meltdown. Their one asset? Their childhood home. They need to get it on the market as soon as possible because they need the money. Yet before her parents died they taped newspaper over the mirrors and nailed shut the attic door.

Sometimes we feel like puppets, controlled by our upbringing and our genes. Sometimes we feel like our parents treat us like toys, or playthings, or even dolls. The past can ground us, teach us, and keep us safe. It can also trap us, and bind us, and suffocate the life out of us. As disturbing events stack up in the house, Louise and Mark have to learn that sometimes the only way to break away from the past, sometimes the only way to sell a haunted house, is to burn it all down.

Puppet on a string

this is the third book I have enjoyed from this author and each one has been delightful, this one how ever was the first one to completely take me by surprise and make me change my opinion on the characters.

A Novel Made for Audiobook

I loved this book. The estrangement of the siblings was palpable and really gave the novel an emotional core. Then it’s craft felt balls to the wall of supernatural horror and dread. The narrator is excellent - one of the best performances on audiobook. It’s scary, it’s funny, it’s absurd, it’s sad - it’s everything.

I’ve been shouting “kaka weewee!” around the house all week, much to my partner’s chagrin.

Unique, fun and creepy - a complete package!

Great characters, unique storyline & twists that kept me guessing. The description of location, vibe, and voices during each conversation were so detailed that I could picture everything in my head. Also, the narrator embodied each character really well.

I can totally see this as a movie! It would be so fun to see it only if it’s done right. My suggestion is to get into this book blind (don’t read too much into reviews) cause I did and it was a great rollercoaster ride!

Unexpectedly Good

I’ve read other Grady Hendrix book, one I really loved, one not so much. This one brought back the satisfaction from the first one I really enjoyed.
Plenty of gore, silly mistakes and a sense of a real, dysfunctional family figuring it all out.

Brilliant

I read horror pretty much exclusively; let me rephrase that, I read gross, graphic horror almost exclusively but I’d heard good things about this one so I thought I’d give it a go. Although not in-your-face graphic horror, this was a fantastic story with likeable, memorable characters, was super creepy in parts and it flowed really well. Hats off to the narrators, especially Mikhaila, she was fantastic! Definitely worth checking out if you like a hood haunted house take.

A Fun Time with a Fun Concept

How to Sell a Haunted House is what I'd consider a good entry to a horror novel suitable for most readers, even those with a lower tolerance.

The writing was good but with questionable character motivations and flip flopping of events and storypaths that felt more like an attempt to subvert expectations rather than a smooth natural flow, that being said I was compelled to stick around to see how it ended.

Performance wise, this was my first audio experience with two narrators. However, the quality between the two to me was night and day. Mikhaila once warmed up to the characters and concepts provided a passable experience where as Jay actively carried the story forward with passion for his segment and the character of Mark had shifted gears, so when this has moved back to Mikhaila, the performance for roles left alot to be deserved, however she conveyed well the spooky and more unsettling moments of the book.

Overall a fun time, and a good option for anyone looking to dip their toes into water with a story about estranged family, loss, and coming to terms with death.
