Annie thought the murders were over.
She was wrong.
It is autumn in Castle Knoll and Annie Adams is busy settling into her new home. She doesn't find Gravesdown Hall particularly cosy, especially since she found two dead bodies there over the summer. What's more, ever since she arrived in the village, Annie has had the creeping sense she's being watched.
Lonely, and desperate for some company, Annie starts talking to a stranger she meets in the grounds of the estate. The striking old woman introduces herself as Peony Lane, the fortune-teller who predicted Great Aunt Frances' murder all those years ago. And now she has a fortune to tell Annie.
Desperate not to fall into the same trap as Frances, Annie flees Peony Lane, refusing to hear any of her grim predictions. But she can't outrun Peony for long, as hours later she finds her, dead on the floor of Gravesdown Hall, a ruby-hilted dagger plunged into her back.
But who killed the mysterious fortune teller and why? And can Frances' library of evidence help Annie solve the case?©2025 Kristen Perrin (P)2025 Quercus Editions Limited

good but not a good as the first one
the plot became over complicated at times, I guess they were trying to outdo the first book. overall it was a fun listen but I'm not sure I'll follow the series further.

Book 2 a pocketful of clues
When I read a whodunit? I always find myself wondering about the writer’s process. Do the twists and turns develop naturally as the story develops? Does the writer already know the rough shape of the whole story or are they themselves taken on a journey which finishes in an unexpected place? Or do they work back from the ending? Is their writing space wallpapered with a myriad of pale yellow post so they don’t forget to tie up all of the threads?!
Kristen Perrin’s second book in this series builds on the first book and I think it’s even better. The plot is twistier, the history and modern day intertwined more expertly, and I was was even keener to get to the end. Kristen does an expert job in keeping the reader guessing. The only secret I worked out ahead of time was who Annie’s mother was secretly in contact with…a central figure for book 3 most certainly.
So now I await book 3.
