Includes useful introductory information & advice
This was easily digestible with many clear examples of useful improvements that can be implemented in one’s communication. I recommend it for students and those who lack confidence in their communication. It sounded like ‘ec cetera’ was being said instead of ‘et cetera’. I’m not sure if it was an audio problem, an error or an inside joke.

Wrong choice of narrator.
I didn't make it very far through this book I'm afraid. I felt that every sentence was either encapsulated with quotation marks and/or, finished with an exclamation mark. This was frustrating as a book on learning really aught to have considered that how it was presented might have an effect on how the listener learned or did not learn from the book. An alternate narrator may have improved my experience, but your mileage may vary.

Meh. Glad I didn't pay for it.
I had high hopes for this title, but didn't really learn anything other than the common sense stuff about conversation that most of us probably already know.
Also, I can't think too highly about a lexicographer who mispronounces common words (eck-cetera??)
It was mildly interesting, but I'm glad I didn't pay or use a credit for it.

This is infotainment, it is not research based.
This “course” should be viewed as what it is, infotainment. She has some fun trivia, but that’s about it.
As coach of 30 years, I have read and listened to a lot of information on language, because how a message is said, and how a message is received is as important as the message.
I stopped listening when I got to the part about how the difference between how men and women communicate. It’s not important to know they are different? According to who? A comedian? Red flag that this is in
Then there is the psychology of male vs female as far as beliefs, empathy, perception, experiences, etc….

Not many words about what the book was meant to be about
I thought the book was going to be about word choices for effective communication. That was covered but I felt that it was not even half of the book. Big part of the book was instead about curiosities about words, languages and cultures that do not relate to the main theme that I was expecting.

Good title, bad book
Expected to hear words that make a difference. Instead, heard theories and fluff. Including "what is a dictionary" and whether it's role should be "descriptive" or "prescriptive". Who cares? Maybe complete beginners can get something out of this. After 3 hours, I still can't.

Exetera
This was not a book about how you can say things differently, this was a linguistics' ramble on how different words mean different things, how you should be precise in your words choices, and some etymology. Good book about those topics, yes, but no guidance on HOW. Also, the reader kept on pronouncing et cetera as exetera. Made me want to stop listening immediately. Ironically, the book tells you to not use foreign borrowed words if you don't know how to pronounce them correctly.

Not for me
Gave up after a couple of hours. Lots of talking but no real content for me anyway.

Ok on catalogue plus
Interesting, but I realised that I communicate in the wrong way quite often, and use the least effective language in order to achieve my goals. I construct sentences that are far too long and repeat myself too much too, so I feel quite down now 🙄🤐😭. I feel that there was a need for more examples, so we could fully understand what she meant in practice.
Overall it was ok on catalogue plus, but I wouldn't pay for it.

Useful
Useful book, full of thought provoking and practical techniques. A book you’ll read again and again.

Limp Biscuit
Slow start. Some parts are so obvious you’d think it was marketed for a child but some bits are genuinely interesting - the gender chapter 4, etymology, and grammar choices like using verbs (although not a hard and fast rule and it doesn’t really nail what is said) instead of adjectives so that it’s not left to the reader to come up with what is meant - they are shown. There were little bits in it like that which were interesting, but you need to dive through a lot of drivel to find them. At one point there was almost a chapter (ok, not literally but…) on what IRONY is. My niece is 9, she knows what it means to be ironic, you can hold off on the examples and differences between coincidence and irony. There is a lot of repetition generally. I also found the focus on modal verbs to soften vocab a bit limp, if someone is offended by being told fact then I would recommend some therapy over the director of said conversation being given a puff thesaurus. But then again, perhaps this is why my review sounds negative, in which case, touché. I’ll give it 3/5 - after all, I wouldn’t have bothered finishing it
