Publisher's Summary

Ever been tempted by running a marathon? Maybe you’re well on your way to conquering the iconic distance. In any case, you’ve come to the right place! Join marathon-pro Vassos Alexander as he shows us why we shouldn’t be afraid of attempting the 26-mile stretch once and for all.

Every marathon runner’s journey is different. You might have caught the bug after experiencing that adrenaline rush of completing your first 5k; it might be a desire to finally cross something off your bucket list; or, perhaps it was a bit of an absentminded afterthought while watching TV, crisps in hand, and a niggling voice saying ‘maybe I could do that’ - it was for Vassos, at least. However far along you are in your journey, How to Run a Marathon shows us that absolutely anyone can take those first steps to defeating the distance. In fact, you’ll probably end up enjoying it a lot more than you think.

Including inspiring interviews with running legends, charming tales of remarkable marathons throughout the world, crucial training and nutrition tips and so much more, Vassos shares all the lessons he’s learnt - from the start line to the finish line.

Funny, candid and motivating, this book will not only help you succeed in marathon running but empower you to complete the distance the way you want to. Whether that’s achieving a particular time, or simply finishing in one piece, How to Run a Marathon will guide you through.

Decent but not brilliant

I like Vassos Alexander’s writing style (descriptive and engaging but with no self-indulgent waffle) so I was keen to read this.

This book is a decent read for runners of all abilities. I particularly liked hearing the stories of lots of other runners (although paying a few more voice actors would have helped in this arena) but it is annoying how many of his stories he repeats in his books. Presumably he thinks readers will never read more than one?

If you’re not going to add much more new content, just update your old books, rather than releasing a new one. It’s disrespectful to your loyal readers and looks as though you’re more interested in making money than creating a high-quality, unique read.

Great

Personable Vassos delivers. It's probably mainly aimed at beginner runners but there's plenty here for everyone. Entertaining and varied.

Returning to running

I really enjoyed this book/guide. Having previously ran marathons in the past I was looking for something to reignite my love of running in preparation for starting my London marathon training plan. This has done just the trick. Great stories, guidance and advice throughout, I was disappointed that it had to come to an end, I will, no doubt, be re-listening to this book again in the future.

The only let down is the non Vassos narrators. Format and content were really good.

Great book, but not an easy listen

I’ve listened to all of Vassos’ books and enjoyed them, but in the previous ones it was often confusing when he would read the words of contributions as you would lose track of whose words you were listening to. So I appreciate getting voice artists in to read the words of others. But the American accents... crikey. That was a tough listen in places. Not the artists' fault at all, just a really bad decision to get them doing accents which hugely vary in quality. Don't let this stop you getting the book though!

Good book on all things running!

Really enjoyed this book, possibly the 2nd half more than the first. For anyone preparing for a marathon I found the latter half to have more useful, practical advice; with the first half being more anecdotal. Both have their use, but for those wanting more to prep for marathon I’d start with 2nd half first then read the first.

Ever so occasionally the attempts at American/Canadian accents of the male and female performers detracts ever so slightly from what they are saying in that you are conscious it’s not someone hailing from that country, but this aside, it’s read well and compellingly by all.

Well worth a punt for a soon-to-be first time marathon attemptee like me (whenever that is even allowed!).

Essential Marathon reading

I found this book really useful as a guide to all marathon running related matters. Vassos shares his experiences and has lots of good tips from various experts as well as his own .

Love Vassos Alexander!

I really like Vassos Alexander’s books. They are so inspirational and occasionally make me laugh out loud while running. Listen to it if you like running and check out his other books as well. Would have liked if he narrated the whole book like the other ones but it is not because the other narrator’s were bad.
