Story
In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter Gray argues that our children, if free to pursue their own interests through play, will not only learn all they need to know but will do so with energy and passion. Children come into this world burning to learn, equipped with the curiosity, playfulness, and sociability to direct their own education. Yet we have squelched such instincts in a school model originally developed to indoctrinate, not to promote intellectual growth.

John Taylor Gatto's Weapons of Mass Instruction focuses on mechanisms of traditional education which cripple imagination, discourage critical thinking, and create a false view of learning as a byproduct of rote-memorization drills. Gatto's earlier book, Dumbing Us Down, introduced the now-famous expression of the title into the common vernacular. Weapons of Mass Instruction adds another chilling metaphor to the brief against conventional schooling.

At 10, we know how girls are pigeonholing themselves into what they think they should be. Whether they see themselves as academic or not, whether they are interested in boys, puberty is a reality, friendship fights are underway and the influence of social media is impacting. With heightened pressure from what they see in the media, in movies and on TV, our girls are leaving childhood behind well before they hit their teens. Not surprisingly, emotions can be heightened and relationships can be fraught.

Story
We may not realize it, but children are hyperaware of money. They have scores of questions about its nuances that parents often don't answer, or know how to answer well. But for Ron Lieber, a personal finance columnist and father, good parenting means talking about money with our kids much more often. When parents avoid these conversations, they lose a tremendous opportunity—not just to model important financial behaviors, but also to imprint lessons about what their family cares about most.
Publisher's Summary
Random House presents the audiobook edition of How to Raise Successful People written by Esther Wojcicki, read by Andrea Gallo.
Being a parent is complicated - but the trick to succeed is simpler than you think.
There are no Nobel Prizes for parenting or education, but if there were, Esther Wojcicki would be the bookies’ favourite. Known as the Godmother of Silicon Valley - or simply Woj - Esther’s three daughters have all gone on to huge success in their professional fields and, more importantly, their personal lives. What’s her secret?
As we face an epidemic of parental and childhood anxiety, Woj has the advice every parent wants to hear: climb out of that helicopter and relax.
Her tried and tested 'trick' system will help you:
- Let your child discover their own passions
- Move on from past parenting mistakes
- Build rock-solid foundations for a lifelong relationship
- Be brave enough to give your child freedom
- Work with your children, not against them
- Set healthy relationships with technology
Your children are the future. If you change your parenting, you can change the world.

Essential reading for all parents
Admittedly I was deceived by the cover of the book and initially perceived it to describe helicopter parenting. But it was quite the opposite. The book is framed by TRICK (Trust, Respect, Independence, Collaboration and Kindness) which is a simple but essential values system for anyone including kids.
The book is made relatable through Wocicki's experiences as a parent, grandparent and high school educator.
There are many nuggets that I have and will continue to self reflect on as a parent in order adapt my parenting style for the betterment of my children.
Thank you 'Woj' for sharing this with the world!

We obviously have different ideals!
I don’t doubt that she raised some very successful daughters but after reading this book i would argue that it’s in spite of their mother and more to do with their parents and Palo Alto connections. Sending a 4 year old to the shops alone, leaving them in the car while you just run into the shops, having your teenage children travel the world and not contact you for months. These are not things to get on board with. Teaching them kindness, resilience and grit I agree but that was about it. I kept listening to find some nugget of gold but unfortunately I didn’t.
