Publisher's Summary

As a clinical psychologist, Dr Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual health that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she'd learned with others—and soon The Holistic Psychologist was born.

Now Dr LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In How to Do the Work, she offers both a manifesto for self-healing and an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr LePera helps us recognise how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviours can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled and unwell.

In How to Do the Work, Dr LePera offers listeners the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviours to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental health and self-care.

New recording by Courtney Patterson.

Computer generated/robotic reading of the book

I am so disappointed by the reading of this. I follow Dr LePera and had been looking so forward to this book. This is unlistenable though and I wish someone had told her it was for the best if she let someone else perform the narration. It is robotic and the tempo is disjointed and it almost sounds computer generated - it is utterly passionless which I know from watching her videos, is not reflective of her work.
I sped the book to 1.5 and it helped but have returned and will wait for the paperback to be available in Australia.

Poorly executed

Dr LePera has been exponentially successful in connecting with an audience via her instagram account The Holistic Psychologist. Within the IG platform Dr LaPeras' evocative quotes, breakdowns and topical subject matter have struck a chord with her core followers. I am someone who has subscribed her account for some years and enjoy her snapshot insights into human relational nature and behaviour. This book I feel has not translated well into either a narrative, a self help book or a scientifically backed manual for those seeking to heal (a somewhat cryptic concept) or understand their own patterns of behaviour.

For a pHD I would have expected a much more rigorously edited and scientifically presented case towards self 'healing'. Yoga, mindfulness and somatic work have been established for 30 years within certain psychology sectors by pioneers such as Dr van der Kolk, Dr Pat Ogden and Dr Peter Levine. These practitioners have groundings in protocol and somatic techniques which I feel would be better discussed than the ad hoc approach presented in this book. Perhaps the argument of omission would be this not appeasing her target audience but Dr LaPera rarely if at all references any evidenced based practices or protocols within her approach. When she does make reference to published content it is almost without exception a disposable quote with limited context (Dr Gabor Maté as an example; who's name is mispronounced repeatedly).

Furthermore this book serves as testament to drive home a self narrative around Dr LaPera's perceived poor treatment as a child and adult child of an outwardly functioning family with dysfunctional internal dynamics. I use the word perceived because the accused(s) within her book (to my knowledge) have not been given recourse or a voice to provide their version of events or offer any defence. Rather than healthily consider the autonomous adult decisions that might have contributed to Dr Lapera's somatic symptoms and CNS dysfunction, Dr LaPera repeatedly reiterates her narrative without apparent insight into her own behaviour as an adult. I found this both challenging to read and frustrating from a point of what I understood as her own self imposed sense of determinism. I don't believe this is a message that offers hope to survivors or offers any real value, I am concerned in some cases it may promote apathy.

I truly believe Dr LaPera is attempting to help her audience on a level she herself found some level of comfort, I find her instagram platform the most useful to that end. I would strongly caution anyone with significant pathology or trauma to not invest in this book.

Computer altered narration difficult to follow

The pace and pronunciation of the narration was unusual, robotic and difficult to follow detracting from the book content.

Given the heavy subject matter, which talks to a lot of the shortcomings in our upbringings, a less stern, gentler, non computer altered narrator voice would be easier to follow and more motivational.

Amazing book

Thank you for listening to your readers and having the book re-narrated. I almost returned it as it was up listenable but grateful to have held off.
The content is so valuable, it would be helpful to have the activities on PDF for practically when “doing the work”.

Needs PDF of the notes

I really loved this book but it would be helpful
To have a PDF of the “ do the work” notes as it’s hard to write while listening.

Great book! - Better PDF Required

I absolutely love the book and love Dr Nicole LePera's work
The audiobook has been great though I had to purchase a hard copy, I found it very hard to follow the prompts from the "how to do the work" section in each chapter. It would be great to include these in the PDF as we see in other audiobooks.

Great content but narration needs to be fixed

I love Dr Nicole’s work and have been waiting for the book with excitement. I’m really enjoying it so far and getting used to the narration which is a bit slow (I find 1.3x speed works quite well). I’m a few chapters in and I think the narration is improving. The content is great!

Great content

Loved the content!
Three stars because I believe the pdf should have all the Journal prompts and reflections. It is a complete pain to have to listen, pause and write then repeat every few seconds to write out the prompts so that I can do the practical parts of this work.

Audio

Great content but really difficult to follow with this audio commentary, robotic and poor spacing.
