Summary

The one who expects the world, but never remembers your birthday. The one who constantly ditches your dinner plans when you’re already halfway to the restaurant. The one who leaves you feeling exhausted, used and completely emotionally battered.

Why do we let these people into our lives? When is their friendship actually friend-shit? How do we dump these crappy companions?

This is the no-bullshit, essential guide for anyone devoting their precious time and energy into maintaining friendships with toxic friends. Using activities, truth bombs, and real-life examples, neuropsychologist Dr Hannah Korrel will help you to identify the bad friends in your life, understand what true friendship should look like, learn how to attract the best people and become the best friend you can be yourself.

Provocative, funny, and brutally honest, How to Break Up With Friends will change the way you look at friendship forever.

This book is crucial reading for everyone! I read this book in my mid-30's, and wish I had this sound advice years ago. From the opening chapter I felt so seen and heard. Everything Dr. Korrel touches on is extremely relevant to those of struggling or who have struggled with toxic friendships/relationships at any stage of life, and she even offers advice on how to manage yourself in those relationships too. Highly recommend this book, an absolute must read!

The entire book was greatly helpful. The author discusses friendships in general and ways in which sometimes things go wrong. There is a lot of wisdom here, and I found clarity plus a new perspective that helped me deal with my emotions, take my time to evaluate the situation and come up with a strategy. Her words really opened my eyes, and helped me to stop making excuses for someone who was clearly taking me for granted. The title suggests that the book is primarily about breaking up - but in fact it's an exploration of friendships in trouble. She spends time talking about the possibility of reconciliation, and things to consider if that's what you'd like to do.

I found Chapter 9: "Doing the Deed - how do we break up with them?" to be wonderfully helpful. The author talks about what to say and what NOT to say (and why) - and offers a range of examples to use as a starting place. This helped me to prepare a plan and exactly what to say and how (letter? phone? email? text? in person?).

In the end, I decided to end the friendship I was concerned about. It hurts, but I have a kind of peace that I didn't have before - and I feel good about how I went about making the ending. This book definitely got me there.

Outstanding book - esp. Chapter 9
